Olá! Welcome to We Travel Portugal! We’re Annie and Ollie and we want to share Portugal with you. We’ve been creating and sharing guides with a focus on history and culture since 2018! You’ll find everything here, from travel guides, to local stories, and even our favourite Portuguese recipes! Madeira is on the migratory route of just under 30 species of whales and dolphins, as well as being home to a resident population of sperm whales, and there are few experiences to match the thrill of seeing them in their natural environment. On this two-and-a-half-hour adventure, you’ll have an excellent chance of spotting some of these captivating creatures, along with a host of other marine life including turtles. Starting with a short introductory talk, you’ll head out to sea on a trio of nippy semi-rigid boats with Rota dos Cetáceos’ team of marine biologists, keeping your eyes peeled for the tell-tale glimpse of a fin, tail or blow. In this, you’ll be assisted by lookouts on land who have up-to-the-minute information as to likely locations. It’s a brilliant way to spend a morning or afternoon that will appeal to families with older children as well as couples. Meloneras: Luxe holidays await in this swoon-worthy spot! Confusingly, the term brandy and the Portuguese equivalent aguardente can be used to describe many other types of alcohol. Aguardente comes from a combination of the words água (water) and ardente (fiery). Varieties, especially the homemade ones have a reputation to match their name. Essentially, any ingredient can be used to form a brandy. In the Algarve, you may have come across Aguardente de Medronho. Aguardente de cana-de-açúcar, well that’s brandy from cane sugar and it’s much popularly known as Cachaça. It is easy to be confused between brandy in the traditional sense (distilled wine), and any type of distilled alcohol. To make sure you’re getting the brandy you desire pay close attention to the label! Brandy and what has it got to do with Portugal? I’m not so familiar with specific aged vintages in Portuguese brandies. But you can get some very good aged 20 or 30 year bottles without breaking the bank. I’m sure those would be appreciated!
