About this deal

With so many neat drawing boards to consider, the first thing to think about is how you intend for your child to use it. If it's simply to let their imagination run wild, a straightforward, colorful model with a stylus and sliding eraser will keep them entertained. Besides extras (like magnets or stencils), the biggest difference you'll find between those is the size of the drawing pad itself. An 8 by 10-inch (the size of printer paper) display offers plenty of doodle space, but consider an even more compact one if you want extra portability. These drawing boards are made of a plastic frame that contains a screen. The screen is a honeycomb, and each cell is filled with a paint-like substance in which tiny particles of iron are suspended. This magnetic drawing board table can be configured in three different ways, making it an exceptionally versatile item. When your child is younger, you can extend the legs and use the board in its table form, making it an ideal option for use while sitting on the floor. The tip of the pen is spring-loaded, which prevents damage to the screen if your toddler pushes down too hard.

The Magna Doodle was produced by Tyco until 1998 when most of Tyco's toys were sold to Fisher-Price. The Magna Doodle is currently produced by The Ohio Art Company and used to be distributed in the United Kingdom by Fisher-Price. Fisher-Price has discontinued the Magna Doodle and have produced their own alternative, the Doodle Pro. It is still available in the UK, from the distribution company Megatel LTD. It’s actually a very simple device; a plastic screen that you write on with the accompanying stylus. Because the Magna Doodle uses no ink or graphite, it is used by scuba divers as an underwater whiteboard when instructing students, and by divers who wish to pass short notes. [3] [4] The Magna Doodle is not specifically designed to work underwater and many of its components can rust or otherwise deteriorate over time. In the TV comedy Friends, a Magna Doodle is visible in Joey and Chandler's apartment, with various messages written on it throughout the series, referencing plot points, current events, inside crew jokes, or just random drawings. [6]Smaller boards are easy to throw into a bag as take-a-long amusement. But larger boards can be more suitable for teaching and kids who enjoy making big creations. Now I’ll admit right now that the nuts and bolts of how something is technically put together isn’t really something my brain seems to be able to grasp, so the actual science part of it goes right over my head. However, if you just want to be able to vaguely understand why you can draw a line on the surface of the Magna Doodle when the stylus isn’t really a pen, then I’ll give it a go…

Meanwhile, you also have two tabletop options. You can fold the legs under and use it as a standard magnetic drawing board, or you can extend two legs and have the board sit on the table at an angle. In 1974, four engineers from Pilot Pen Corporation invented a "dustless chalkboard." Their invention has become one of the most popular drawing toys, with more than 40 million sold since its introduction. Countless children have enjoyed playing and learning with it. It was in 1974 that engineers from the Pilot Pen Corporation invented what they described as the ‘dustless chalkboard’. Sold by toy companies Tyco in the US and Fisher Price in the UK, the rights to this inventive little drawing board now rest with The Ohio Art Company, who also own the Etch-a-Sketch.

Beyond sketching, these magnetic toys are also great for learning to write letters and numbers, however, if you have a pre-K or early elementary-school-aged child and you really want to hone in on developing fine motor skills, look for models with more interactive features like animated guides or tactile metal beads. Magnetic drawing boards are a relatively inexpensive way to give your child endless hours of artistic and educational opportunities. The eraser handle is at the bottom of the Magna Doodle – slide it from one side to the other and a long bar magnet, which fits snugly out of sight behind the screen, pulls the particles away from the top screen, giving you a nice clean surface to draw on again.

The screen on this magnetic doodle board is 17×13.77 inches, making it a good option for toddlers who may not yet have the fine motor skills to enjoy writing on a smaller board. Every Friends doodle-board easter egg explained: What episodes they're in and what the messages mean

The screen has four color zones, one each of red, blue, green, and yellow. The green and orange frame also contains three magnetic stamps — one star, one heart, and one cute little bunny head. In " The One With Mac And C.H.E.E.S.E." a plot point is made of how Chandler attempts and fails to leave an important message for Joey in this Magna Doodle. The Vivitoy magnetic drawing board has four different colored areas on the 6.1 x 4.3-inch screen. This drawing area is surrounded by a wide, brightly colored frame that has rounded edges and corners. The sliding eraser is easy to move across the unit to clear the picture. They can also, amazingly, be used underwater, so to that end they are a great aid to communication between divers. Although it has to be said, they are not made to be waterproof and therefore won’t survive repeated dunkings, so if this is what you have planned for your Magna Doodle you may need to buy a supply of them.

If you're a 90s kid or had children or grandchildren in the 90s in the UK, you'll probably remember some if not all of these vintage toys and games, and some might even still be lurking in your loft.Use the Magna Doodle board to draw pictures, write messages, play games, practice letters and numbers, and inspire imaginations And they’re not just used as toys, despite being marketed as such. Teachers have used them to encourage their students to read and write – they can practise over and over again without using up resources or leaving that chalk dust covering everything. Team coaches have been known to scribble on them during sports matches, so that they can then hold them up and show the team in action what they want them to do next. Bought this drawing board for my child and it turned out to be a fantastic gift. They use it multiple times a day and their artistic skills, as well as their ability to hold crayons and pens, have improved. Although the board feels a bit cheap, the love my child has for it makes up for that. The board's size is larger than expected, providing ample drawing space, and the stamps work well for creating shapes. The clearing swipe usually cleans the board in one go, making it convenient and efficient for continuous play. Why Should You Buy a Magnetic Drawing Board? A pen attached by a string. Ensure the string is long enough to be usable, but not so long as to be dangerous. When you drag the magnetic tip of the stylus across the outer section of the plastic screen the magnetic particles are pulled to the top of the liquid and can be seen through the outer plastic. The edges of each cell ensure that there is an even distribution of them across the entire screen. The particles remain happily on the top of the liquid in the pattern the stylus drew until the eraser is drawn across the screen.
