The entire island is a national park, managed by the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service. Steeped in history, Maria Island is also the most preserved and intact example of convict life across Australia.

If you are staying on the island for a few days, you can walk to Frenchs Farm and Encampment Cove. This is a great place to camp and get away from everyone. By Bicycle Encampment Cove was the location of one of the original convict cells, and you can still explore the old buildings today. Just be careful, as they are quite dilapidated. The absorbing story of the Cretan village of Plaka and the tiny, deserted island of Spinalonga – Greece’s former leper colony – is told to us by Maria Petrakis, one of the children in the original version of The Island.Pedal with some power assistance on this gentle tour through the island’s natural and human history. Snorkelling This entire island was declared a national park in 1971, which is protected by Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service. There is only one town on the island called Darlington. I actually wouldn’t even call it a town as there are no services; only the old convict probation station and historic buildings. We’re going to level with you – the real highlight of any trip to Maria Island is going to be seeing a wombat! Well it all depends what you are into – history, hiking, biking, animals? Please say animals. Because there’s lots of them!

This article is about the Mexican islands. For the Falkland island known as Isla María, see Bleaker Island. For the small islands of the coast of St. Lucia, see Islands of Saint Lucia. For the Czech card game known as Mariáš which is similar to a German game, see Sixty-Six (card game). Islas Marías From Encampment Cove it is only a little more than a 1 kilometre (0.62mi) walk to the ruins of Maria Island's second (probation-era) convict station at Point Lesueur on the island's west coast (also known as Long Point). Soldiers Beach and Bloodstone Beach on the western side of the island are also well worth the effort that it takes to reach them, as are Shoal Bay and Riedle Bay, the beaches either side of McRaes Isthmus.Wandering through tall eucalypt forest, you’ll come across the old reservoir which is a perfect spot for a picnic. The marine section of the national park protects a representative area of Tasmanian East Coast marine habitat, and has significantly larger individuals and populations of key marine species than surrounding waters. This area is one of the most intensively studied marine protected areas in Australia and is popular with divers. The marine section of the park extends from an unnamed point north-east of Bishop and Clerk, westwards to Cape Boullanger and then southwards as far as Return Point. The marine boundary's definition varies, but it is never more than 1km from Maria Island's low water mark. Unfortunately, we never got up here as the mountain was fogged over the 2 days we were on the island. This is the view from the top of Bishop and Clerk. I can imagine the view from the top of this Maria Island walk on a clear day would be even better. Conclusion of Our Maria Island Travel Guide The 115.5-square-kilometer (44.6 sq mi) island is about 20 kilometers (12 mi) in length from north to south and, at its widest, is about 13 kilometers (8.1 mi) west to east.
