One of the best things about this double edge safety razor is the adjustment ability. You can easily adjust the aggressiveness of the razor as you like. Having never used a safety razor before, I thought the FUTUR might be a good one to start with. While no disasters occurred, I did find that there were some things about it that weren’t optimal for me.

Length:The Merkur Futur’s handle length is approximately 108 mm (4.30″), giving users greater control and reach during the shave, especially for those with larger hands. I noticed the design is not as intuitive as it probably should be. There is a slight risk you might cut yourself if you don’t load the blade on carefully. Make sure you’re holding the sides of the top panel while setting it down over the blade base. The Merkur Futur is a great adjustable safety razor, one of the best safety razors ever made. It set the standard for adjustable double edge safety razors and still lives up to its reputation. Men with moderate to coarse beards will find this razor a handy tool that can replace several safety razors. Here are several other adjustable safety razors that are worth considering instead of the Merkur Futur:

built their empire on a simple but classic design. The safety razors in their collection are createdJohn Miller is a passionate wet shaving enthusiast, a pastime he has been devoted to for the past 7 years. A veteran of the trade, he has earned the reputation of being an meticulous advocate of traditional wet shaving. When John first got into the hobby, he read and researched the techniques extensively, often trying new blades and techniques, and now has an unparalleled knowledge of the best products, techniques, and tools available. The Model T very much resembles the classic adjustable safety razors of the 1960s like the Gillette Fatboy and Slim.

Noticeable differences above include the Futur being heavier and longer than the standard Progress 500 and long-handled 510. The Futur is a beast – weighing in at 126g. Taking the head apart is always risky, especially with soapy hands mid-shave. Any time you take the blade out requires concentration with any safety razor, so having to work out different plate settings with the other hand seems daunting. Plus you can lose base plates, especially when travelling. I have already mentioned that the Progress has a standard and long-handle version. The overall length is very similar for the Futur and long-handled Progress, with the Futur having an extra 4mm.

Other expert shavers like GeoFatBoy recommend drying your fingers first before adjusting and only holding the sides of the head. Bulky shaving head Now, what changes the game here between both of these overall is the blade gap measurements (it’s a decider). The Futur is more aggressive, even from setting 1, compared to setting 5 of the Progress. I find the new version to be very mild in low settings, in fact you can’t cut anything in settings 0.5-1 even if you press hard. I find it OK in settings 3-4, so I am always surprised when some people say that it is aggressive (I like mild razors), but that may refer to the first revision. Manufactured by Merkur Stahlwaren in Solingen, Germany, who have for many years manufactured the finest razors and grooming accessories, using only the highest quality materials and finest craftsmanship. The blade replacement on the Merkur Progress is more old-fashioned in a sense compared to the Future, which may not be a bad thing.
