What good would a changing robe be without a hood? Nestling your weary head into a comforting hood is one of the greatest pleasures of any changing robe experience. All the fabric is 100% recycled and unlike other changing robes the outer is made from premium twill, so it really feels like a proper coat. There's nothing quite like the invigorating hit that comes with plunging yourself into icy cold water. And nothing quite so uncomfortable as the violent, chilblain-like shivers that set in once you get out. But you don't have to put up with the post-swim shakes to reap all the benefits of cold water swimming. A full zip on the front means getting it on and off is simple, plus the toggle hood means you can pull it tight to keep out windchill on those blustery days by the shore. While changing robes are by no means essential, if you make a habit of submerging yourself in freezing cold water, it's a good idea to have some means of warming yourself up afterwards. 'One of the many great things about outdoor swimming is that the kit needs are minimal,' says Rew. 'You can dry yourself in a standard towel, or make your own changing robe by sewing two towels together. And afterwards you can just wear a coat.'

Side snaps are a priceless feature for when you want some diversity in your changing robe. Their ability to turn your robe into a large beach towel in a matter of seconds is very useful, especially when the priorities of the day revolve around as much beach or pool time as possible. Tis the season. The season of changing robes, that is. As temperatures wobble and drop, the pursuit of outdoor swimming in the UK becomes less ubiquitous and more, well, brave. Whether it's Parliament Hill Lido, the North Sea or Lake Windermere, you can rest assured there will be people bobbing about in water throughout even the iciest of days. And what do all of these people have in common? Other than a stout constitution, the answer always invariably is this: a change robe. The lighter weight towel ponchos are perfect for getting dry and changed after any watersport, while the waterproof change robes are great for the cooler months as they will also protect you from the weather and keep you super warm.Vivida have created eight styles of beauty-defining robes for the avid water enthusiast who wants to dry off and look good while doing so. They have a design for everyone within this range, while two adult sizes (one of which is suitable for wider builds up to a generous 6 foot 5) offer even more inclusion. Sleeve length: Do you plan on wearing your change robe through summer and autumn and into winter? If so, long sleeves might be the most sensible option, preferably ones with adjustable cuffs so you can seal off against any potentially freezing winds come November. Shorter sleeves meanwhile, are a better, more flexible option for those fair weather swimmers only, or for those wanting to avoid trapping any more sand than they already have. Side splits are built into changing robes for the sole purpose of giving your legs more room to move. By having this additional movement, you'll be able to change with ease and gain confidence in your ability to get dressed without taking an unfortunate tumble.

This microfibre towelling change robe from Vivida is super fast-drying (it claims to dry four times faster than cotton) and absorbs seven times its weight in water. We've only worn it on warm days and it did dry very fast, but can't speak to how it might hold up in chillier climes. It is one size but that does seem to cater for all — it feels incredibly cosy on me at 5’4”, but it’s also being used (stolen) on the reg by my 6’2” boyfriend who relies on it to take the edge off after an ice bath.It has a softer, more forgiving structure than some other changing robes so doubles up as a great cosy coat for camping trips, dog walks, chilly pub gardens... you get the idea.
