Facebook 0 Tweet 0 LinkedIn 0 Let’s stalk: Will York Theatre Royal’s fabled ghost, The Grey Lady, make an appearance during The Haunted Season this autumn? I was intrigued by the title and I love a good murder mystery. I have read all Agatha Christie, Conan Doyle and several authors of the ‘Golden Age Detective Fiction’ of 1920s and 1930s in which this novel is set. However, this novel was very disappointing. She uses peculiar vocabulary, which I think sounds researched as ‘of the era’ but adds nothing to the book. A lot seems overwritten and gets boring to decipher. An example: A nice, cosy murder mystery with endearing and secretive characters and an ending that I couldn't have guessed.

Theatre review: Murder in the Dark at York Theatre Royal Theatre review: Murder in the Dark at York Theatre Royal

Murder in the Dark is being performed at York Theatre Royal until 23 September 2023. The production is presented by Original Theatre, Trafalgar Theatre productions and JAS Theatricals. The director is Philip Franks.

The language used was quite confusing: being set in the 1930s a lot of old slang is used, however this is mixed in with formal language which made me confused about the social contexts of the scenes. Written by Brian Clemens and Dennis Spooner, All about Murder takes place in the writing studio at the Oxfordshire country home of Nigel Forbes, played by David Callister. York Theatre Royal begins their new season with Murder in the Dark by Torben Betts. I don’t know about you, but there’s nothing like a thriller to generate a little bit of excitement and there is nothing quite like a murder mystery on an Autumn evening, so I settled down to be entertained. But this production wasn’t quitewhat Iexpected… After crashing his car in a lonely country lane, former pop star Danny (Tom Chambers) finds himself—and his extended family—spending New Year’s Eve in an isolated holiday cottage deep in the English countryside. Also in attendance are the wife and son he abandoned to pursue his musical career, Rebecca (Rebecca Charles) and Jake (Jonny Green), his resentful older brother, William (Owen Oakeshott), and his age-inappropriate girlfriend, Sarah (Laura White).

It is part of the zeitgeist of contemporary film and theatre that we start expecting one thing then find we are presented with quite another. If you keep an open mind you will enjoy Murder in the Dark. The season has changed over the years. Now, in the capable hands of Tabs Productions, it has moved away slightly from the original format. Crimes on Centre Court is a delight from start to finish! Fast and smart as a Cary Grant punchline, this talented team are genuinely funny. Filled with Old school pleasures and fresh foolishness, this is the perfect mix of silly and skilled. It is simply, and impressively, a great night out!” – Emma RiceDavid Callister and Susan Earnshaw are well cast as Nigel Forbes and Maxine Goodman, one a bumptious extrovert who thinks it is time to end their writing partnership, the other an irrational bundle of energy who is easily led. regrettably for its participants, the discussion was bereft of trifles and laden with labour. The combatants sat – one slouching in a posture which conveyed the inconvenience of the protracted dialogue, the other perched uncomfortably in a stance designed to project professionalism and composure – on opposing sides of a great mahogany desk.’

In the home of the restless ghost of the Grey Lady, world premieres by Emma Rice, Matthew Bourne and Tonderai Munyevu will be complemented by scary appearances by horror favourites Dracula, The Hound Of the Baskervilles and the Headless Horseman. From November 2 to 6, York Opera will present The Magic Flute , Mozart’s magical and last great opera, sung in English with an orchestra. Joining the previously announced Tom Chambers as Danny will be Susie Blake as Mrs Bateman, Rebecca Charles as Rebecca, Jonny Green as Jake, Owen Oakeshott as William and Laura White as Sarah.Samuel Collings’ television work includes The Lost Pirate Kingdom, Hex and Outlander. On stage, his credits include The Great Murder Mystery, and Othello and Macbeth at HOME Manchester and Lyric Hammersmith. He last performed at the Theatre Royal Bath in Waiting For God in 2017. Taz Munyaneza recently performed in Our Lady Of Kibeho at Theatre Royal Stratford East and the television series The One. Marc Antolin has appeared in The Magician’s Elephant for the RSC, Romantics Anonymous at Bristol Old Vic and Little Shop of Horrors, for which he received an Olivier Award nomination at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. Philip Cairns’ recent credits include Call The Midwife on BBC1 and, on stage, Cyrano de Bergerac in the West End, Peer Gynt at the National Theatre and Pressure which toured to Bath in 2018. This thrilling new ghost story by acclaimed writer Torben Betts will thrust you into darkness and have you on the edge of your seats until the final chilling twist. I would also add that there are records in TS (Treasury Solicitor’s Department) files (which are not in the list of digitised records, for some reason) and that King George III had a stone thrown at him by a man called Frith in the 1790s who claimed to be Saint Paul and the case of Hadfield sounds rather like the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. In later years Broadmoor was set up following numerous attempts on the life of Queen Victoria, although it is now treated as being a hospital rather than a prison.
