Leucopaxillus giganteus, commonly known as the giant leucopax (formerly as the giant clitocybe) or the giant funnel, is a saprobic species of fungus in the family Tricholomataceae. As its common names imply, the fruit body, or mushroom, can become quite large—the cap reaches diameters of up to 50cm (20in). It has a white or pale cream cap, and is funnel-shaped when mature, with the gills running down the length of the stem. Considered by some to be a choice edible when young, this species has a cosmopolitan distribution, and is typically found growing in groups or rings in grassy pastures, roadside hedges, or woodland clearings. It has been shown to contain a bioactive compound with antibiotic properties. The Fairy Ring Champignon (Marasmius Oreades) looks very similar and also forms fairy rings in grass at around the same time of year. The key difference is that the gills of the Fairy Ring Champignon are free from the stem, whereas the gills of the Fools Funnel run slightly down the stem. Enter the realm of caution as we unveil the hidden dangers of the Ivory Funnel (Clitocybe dealbata), a mushroom that demands respect for its toxic nature. These large funnel-shaped mushrooms uniform in colour, grow in lines or rings, hence the name trooping. Photo credit Sam Webster
