Most product photography happens from a relatively straight-on angle, which works thanks to an opening in the front of the box. Some more advanced boxes will allow for different shooting angles through holes in the top or the sides of the enclosure. If you only ever plan on shooting basic product shots, a hole in the front should be fine. If you want more creative freedom, look for extra openings. Portability The LimoStudio 160W monolight has a funky-looking design compared to other monolights in this range, but that shouldn’t be a problem for most shooters. And although the wattage is on the lower side, for the photographer who just wants to get started in the studio, it’s an excellent option.

The Rotolight NEO 2 is rated for a whopping 2,000 lux maximum brightness at three feet (91.5cm). We couldn’t quite match this in our testing, measuring a peak 1,840 lux at 4,000K, but that’s still noticeably brighter than most competitors. Brightness does drop to around 1,100 lumens at each end of the 3,150-6,300K temperature range, but this is the only issue we found.
While natural light can be great, a lighting kit can help you in a slew of situations. From indoor studio shoots with frustratingly dim lighting to outdoor sessions where your client doesn’t want to be silhouetted against the sunset, there are plenty of times when flashes and continuous lights come in handy. Litepanels has a reputation for producing quality kit aimed at semi-pro videographers, and the Astra 6X panel certainly feels like a quality product. At 3.2kg it’s designed solely for stationary light stand mounting, but the aluminum yoke cradle is very tough, as is the XLR power input connection, plus there’s a quiet cooling fan to ensure the longevity of the electronics and 256 individual LEDs. The included lights offer surprisingly powerful and color-accurate illumination that spreads evenly across the subject. It’s technically portable because all of the gear fits into a single long carrying case. But, it weighs more than 16 pounds, so it’s not the easiest thing to lug around. The kit comes with an eight-leaf barn-door modifier, but it also includes a custom Bowens-mount adapter that attaches to the accessory mount. This makes it a good choice for photographers who already have Bowens or Godox modifiers.The Neewer Vision 4 Strobe kit is amazing value for money considering that a single battery-powered strobe can cost much, much more. The fact that the kit comes with wireless triggers and lighting modifiers means it’s basically a photo studio in a bag.
