The guy I was dealing with from Champion told me that they had a 10% failure rate straight from production From what I've seen on this forum the P.I. cars do better with hotter plugs. The above issue about #s 5&6 is a recurring theme too. Some have fattened the plenum to 4" in an effort to correct this. BMW 2002 Fjord Blue Ireland Stage II • Bilstein Sports • Ireland Headers • Weber 38 • 292 Cam • 9.5:1 Pistons • 123Tune Bluetooth 15" BBS Records indicate jets being done in the '80s on the carb. Car was from the Bay Area and is now in Chicago, so not a ton of altitude difference there. So, the plan is to work on a few small things on Saturday and I wanted to throw new spark plugs in while I was there and take it for a spin. I know BP5ES and BP6ES are the general recommendations for 2002 2.0 liter engines and I always use NGK, but I'm not sure which heat range I should go with. Here's what I know about the engine:

But I won't complain after 9 years of being off the road and "under construction", she finally is drivablewhere as NGK are generally fit and forget, I don't often use bosch plugs but have nothing against them, NGK is the brand leader in the UK spark plug market and are the world's biggest supplier to many major car manufacturers. Each and every one of their products are designed to meet the most rigorous standards and are the professionals' choice because of their quality and technical excellence. Their plugs can be found in use by teams in F1, WRC and MotoGP. Put simply, NGK genuine spark plugs are the workhorse at the heart of smooth-running engines around the world. On 6ES, V-Power or Ultimate + Valvemaster, I get occasional cold-start fouling on my PI. On 7ES it was even worse. But coming full circle, you raise an excellent point and I will put in whatever plugs are currently in there and see how she behaves.

Hi Tom, what compression ratio are you running on the Weber engined car. Is it a Stage 2 type head? Once this was done, then I spent time fiddling with the timing and vacuum advance and the electric choke setting. Other than substantially modified engines, the normal NGK plug recommended is the BP6ES. I note that in the current Moss catalogue , whilst that grade is quoted for 'standard heat range', BP5ES is quoted for use with unleaded fuel and BP7ES for use with increased comp. ratio. I use the BP6ES in my 6 which has a lead-free conversion and a compression ratio of 9.65:1, but occasionally suffers fouled plugs from cold start, which is an inconvenience to say the least. The car in running triple Webers and is fed Shell V Max. Would a switch to the BP 5 plugs improve matters? The carbs have been set up on a rolling road, but, by the time fine jet adjustments were being made, the engine was at full working temperature so cold-start issues were not apparent. Currently i have been using the Champion N9YC with no major problems except the car always seemed to take 2 or 3 attempts to start. With a CR over 11:1, I haven't dared go to 5s. If you want to try it, I'd try in one cylinder and watch the colour very carefully for signs of overheating.
