Gluten sensitivity can be elusive, because most people wait to see a doctor until they have a gluten-induced disease or symptoms they can no longer ignore. As of 2012, it was estimated that 18 million Americans have gluten sensitivity.16 That’s 20 to 30 percent of the population! And that number could be considerably higher. Compare that to the less than 1 percent of the population with diagnosed celiac disease. A must-read book for anyone suffering with chronic pain. Dr. Osborne transforms the way we need to look at not just gluten but most grains and their impact on autoimmune disease and inflammation. No Grain, No Pain is the culmination of decades of research and clinical experience into the realm of the gluten free world. My journey began in the VA hospital after seeing patient after patient suffer with chronic autoimmune pain syndromes. Rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, psoriasis, ankylosing spondylitis, migraine headaches, hypothyroid disease, fibromyalgia were some of the most common diseases that came through the doors. Unfortunately, the standard of care in the hospital was to supply pain medications that did more harm than good. There’s plenty of natural alternatives. I will even caution people about natural alternatives. Just because it’s a supplement and it’s safe for bandwagon, find out why the pain is there because you can do just much damage taking the natural alternative if you don’t figure out the origin of the pain. You can use the natural alternative in the interim, in the beginning, to reduce the pain while you are still hunting out the reason the pain exists in the first place. My brother felt better without the gluten but it was not enough to rid him of all the bowel troubles, but he finally responded well by eliminating all

I left the hospital and started my own practice. One of my very first patients was a young girl with a debilitating, painful joint disease called juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Her case was so bad that doctors didn’t know if she would make it. Her mother was told to prepare for her death within the next 6 months. Because of this, the Make-A-Wish Foundation actually stepped in and granted her and her family a wish. The truth is, those with chronic pain live shorter lives. Autoimmune sufferers have life expediencies that are about 26 years shorter than those without them. The traditional answer for these diseases is pain and immune suppressing drugs whose side effects are worse than the diseases themselves. It is time to stop the madness. The whole-grain goodness myth reigned supreme when I began training clients a few decades ago. To even question whether cereal or oatmeal could become unhealthy seemed akin to blasphemy within the nutrition world.

So if we’re really talking about are these things nourishing, is that fiber nourishing? No, it’s not really nourishing. It’s counter-nourishing. Plus it shuts down our pancreas. Plus it causes digestive problems. Then if we look at some of the other ways and the way grain and legumes are farmed, most of them contain very high levels of molds and mycotoxins. Now our body has to deal and metabolize mycotoxins, which it doesn’t do very well for most people. They don’t do very well. Especially patients who are already in chronic pain. That’s one of the reasons they are in this scenario is they’ve been eating this staple food that’s full of mycotoxin and mold and they don’t metabolize those things very well so it creates an inflammatory response.See the above tattoo? That’s my left arm. If you can’t read it, it says “No Grain. No Pain.” I got it about a year after I was diagnosed with this aggravating disease. I figured if I’m going to mar my body for life, it should at least have some meaning, right? As the saying goes, when you do what you love, you never work a day in your life. It is a gift to be able to help patients from all over the world find hope, health, and happiness. It is a greater gift to have you by my side to share the ride. You are my One. FOREWORD symptoms are more clear and obvious, but the ones with gluten sensitivity have all those mysterious symptoms, hard to link to gluten. So what happens … These medications, one of the side effects is leaky gut. There’s a study just published found that even in low doses, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories cause erosion and ulceration in the stomach and small intestines. Which in and of itself can create a whole battery of problems as it relates to autoimmune disease. The number of people suffering from cancer and heart disease continues to grow every year, despite mainstream medicine’s massive efforts to treat them.

So in a clinical practice setting we want to investigate those four things in every patient who has chronic pain, chronic inflammation, as a baseline to try to help determine where it’s coming from. There are other things that can cause it certainly. There are lots of other factors but those are really the four fundamentals. So now obviously the book is sitting on your shelf there. It looks really good. So when you talk about no grain, are you really talking about taking gluten out of your diet or are you talking about all grains and all forms?Discovering the cause of celiac disease was a huge medical breakthrough. To this day, it is the only autoimmune condition for which we know the cause with 100 percent certainty. But the 1 in 133 people who have celiac disease aren’t the only ones who can benefit from a gluten-free diet. Whether non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) exists was hotly contested for years, but recent research has confirmed that it is possible to be sensitive to gluten without having celiac disease.13 In fact, a much larger number of people have this related condition, known simply as gluten sensitivity. Although the research community is excited about this groundbreaking work, most of the medical establishment is either unaware of or unwilling to accept its implications. Most doctors still confuse gluten sensitivity with celiac disease. But gluten sensitivity clearly activates other autoimmune diseases and other manifestations of pain. We know this both from the large body of scientific research and because when patients with diverse autoimmune diseases remove all grains from their diet, they also eliminate the pain and quell other symptoms.
