The Nokia 8.3 5G’s screen is generally good, outside of one key omission – it doesn’t have a high refresh rate screen. Dig into the camera app menu and you'll also notice that photos can be saved in HEIF format - it's a more efficient format than JPEG and we are starting to see greater compatibility with this format.

A few years ago the Nokia 8.3’s standard 60Hz rating would have been fine, but with key phones including the Pixel 5, Galaxy S20 FE, Moto G 5G Plus and Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro all featuring the tech it feels like an odd omission. The exact dimensions are 171.90 x 78.56 x 8.99mm, with the handset weighing in at 227 grams. It's not a light device, but the heft feels about right given its size. Like most phones these days, that rear is smooth and somewhat slippery. However, somehow the 227g phone feels easy enough to operate single-handed, even the camera app. It's awkward, but possible. Pro photo mode and the Cinema mode afford a degree of manual control over exposure, including white balance, ISO, exposure compensation and shutter speed. When in the Pro Photo mode it is also possible to shoot in RAW dng format as well as the standard JPEG format.Like its rivals, the Nokia places its power and volume controls on the phone’s right hand side. The positioning is intended to lie where a right handed person’s thumb would naturally fall, but for left handed people it’s an outright pain. This is especially true if you want to use the power buttons inbuilt fingerprint scanner. Seemingly a solid all-rounder, does the Nokia 8.3 5G do enough to stand out in the increasingly crowded mid-price phone party? Read on to find out. Ease of Use The Nokia 8.3 5G hits a lot of the features Nokia phones are known for: good value, a decent camera, and a clean software experience. If you want to get involved with 5G but want to spend as little money as possible, then this is a phone worth looking at.

Nokia 8.3 5G review | TechRadar

In its own right, the Nokia 8.3 5G is a solid phone - Nokia's most capable yet - and in the right hands it is possible to make decent photos and videos. But if the camera is a key concern, there are better options out there for the same money. In Pro photo mode, shutter speed can be manually selected up to a maximum of 20 seconds, while ISO goes up to 6400. If you can support the phone using a tripod, then this manual control over shutter speed might well be the best option for low light shooting.Gaming puts an even bigger drain on the battery. Play PUBG the phone lost an average of 14% of its charge per hour. If, like us at Trusted Towers, you’re a fan of unadulterated, pristine clean Android installs then the Nokia 8.3 5G is a top phone. The 8.3 5G is one of a select few phones to come out this year as part of the Android One programme. Elsewhere, there’s a button on the left for calling up Google Assistant, which we’d rather do without, as we found ourselves pressing it accidentally (thankfully, you can turn it off). On the right, there are the usual volume buttons and an enlarged power button, which doubles up as the fingerprint reader.

Nokia 8.3 5G review: Nokia’s first 5G phone is an affordable

You can turn off this feature in the settings, but you can’t reprogram it to do anything else, meaning you’re left with a completely superfluous button. It seems like an odd choice by HMD Global to introduce this on the Nokia 8.3 5G, and we can’t see many people finding it useful. The Nokia 8.3 5G is the first phone from HMD Global to support 5G, and the company is making a big deal of this fact, referring to this as the world’s first “global 5G smartphone”. Here's comparison images, one of the 64 megapixels Pro photo mode and the other is the standard 16 megapixels resolution. Flip the phone around and the rear has a lovely 'Polar Night' finish. The appearance of this multi-tone rich blue colour evolves as its angle is shifted from your viewpoint. Gorgeous. Thankfully outside of this the screen is perfectly serviceable. Measuring in at 6.81-inches big it’s more than spacious enough for regular use, movie watching and gaming. The 1080 x 2400 resolution isn’t the sharpest you’ll find this price, but honestly you’ll struggle to spot individual pixels.Portrait mode works well and we like the degree of customisation regarding blur effect. More serious image makers can also enjoy manual exposure control and RAW format in the Pro photo mode. There’s also a night mode at your disposal, but it’s not as impressive as similar modes on many other phones like the Google Pixel 4a. It allows you to capture shots that look a little brighter than would otherwise be the case, but it never truly impressed us. Roaming: using your home data plan to roam in Zone A is included in all of our Pay Monthly plans. For roaming in other destinations, charges will apply depending on which plan you are on. Consumer Price Index (CPI) changes : *Monthly price shown plus all out of bundle charges will increase by the Consumer Price Index rate published in January of that year + an additional 3.9%. If you have a Device Plan, this will not affect your monthly Device Plan: vodafone.co.uk/pricechanges Likewise, the screen is bright enough for sunny days, with a measured maximum luminance of 591cd/m² with the automatic brightness setting engaged and a torch aimed at the phone’s ambient light sensor at the top of the screen. Nokia 8.3 5G review: Performance and battery life

We know that sending your product in for repair can be an inconvenience. So to provide you reassurance, we have answered some common questions. The 64 megapixel high-res images are clearly sharper when viewed side by side at the same size than the standard 16 megapixels resolution. Now we've covered the general function of the phone, let's get down to what you are really here for - the camera. Yes, in the 8.3 5G there is a 'quad camera' with wide (primary), ultra-wide and macro lenses, plus a depth sensing lens. There has been further additions to video shooting too, with a new 'Cinema' mode. With a large display and 5G capabilities to power, battery life is a potential issue for the Nokia 8.3 5G, but the good news is that we experienced impressive battery performance during our testing, with the phone never failing to make it through a full day on a full charge.
