About this deal

A vast majority of beginning colored pencil artists do not use the medium to its fullest potential. The tendency of the beginner is to mark lightly and use the white of the paper to create lighter values. This is natural since most of us first use a darker medium when we learn to draw. In this case, we must rely on the “white” of the paper to create lighter values and mid tones. Colored pencils, however can be layered and applied with solid applications to create a look not dissimilar to a painting. We don’t need to approach colored pencils in the same way that we would approach graphite drawing. On the upside, they are oil-based, which allows for more layering to build up your color to the desired saturation. That means there is no reason to add much pressure until your final stages of burnishing which can be done with a blunt point to avoid chipping or better yet a colorless blender.

Whenever writing articles about techniques and manipulation of mediums on a surface (i.e. see oil pastel techniques, etc.) we can’t help but question our understanding of art. You might be wondering, "Why should I consider using oil-based colored pencils?" Great question! Here are some perks that make them a favorite among artists and hobbyists alike:However, some subtle universal characteristics generally exist when working with oil cores and the same can be said for pencils with wax cores. So the big question is which is better? Oil? Wax? Unfortunately, that comes down to personal preference and even then a lot of people enjoy both, depending on the brand and circumstance. Wax Core

Oil vs Wax I thought these would be the best budget pencil on this list but the fact of no lightfast rating prevented these from making the cut. The price suggests that these are not lightfast. This particular line of oil-based colored pencils is their new line of colored pencils and is an extremely lightfast pencil designed for professional artists who need their colors to last over time. They're also free from most common allergens, including latex, gluten, egg, dairy, soy, peanut, and tree nut. Although they can be layered with ease, they will seldom reach the same “buttery” consistency that can be achieved with wax-based pencils. Although this waxy build up is desired by many colored pencil artists, others prefer to apply controlled layers that never reach this consistency. You don’t have to be a pro to enjoy these because this is a super versatile pencil and can be used for coloring books to drawing provided you can afford the price tag.
