About this deal

Because most resources are applied to the high-profile home invasion investigation, Walker ends up as the main investigator rather than a mere advisor and is careful to hide this from his own boss. The novel opens with a horrific home invasion involving two parents and their eight-year-old daughter, Gabby, in Gold Coast, Queensland. DS Lucas Walker of the Australia Federal Police is running a training course on the Gold Coast not yet able to return to active duty after his leg was shattered while in his hometown of Caloodie where he got involved with a case.

Walker remains convinced there is more at play. Working in the organised crime unit has opened his eyes to the growing drug trade in Australia's remote interior. Could this be connected to that dark and violent world? As with many seemingly straightforward missing persons cases, there’s a subversive subplot that makes itself known as Lucas begins digging deeper with his investigation. Drugs are involved (of course) as well as higher powers in the police force (inevitably) and the combination serves to create obstacles and greater danger to our protagonists. With multiple new and previously introduced characters, Wolf then delivers a satisfying, way above-average police procedural full of interesting characters and plots and does well in breathing life into her characters – even the villains. Not only that, Wolf’s writing again exhibits a wonderfully smooth style that clearly feeds the anticipation of the arrival of her future work.If you're looking for something that hooks you in from the start and you can't wait to finish. This is worth a shot! Walker’s taciturn boss has strongly suggested to him that he act solely as that advisor, keep his head down, and avoid any sort of controversy. Finished this book within a day ... I honestly loved it, really had you guessing who the murderer was 'til the last minute' Reader review, 5 stars Soon enough, he is made a deputy and requested to help in the investigation of a gang-style murder of Matt Monroe, a notorious drug dealer.

In fact, anyone with knowledge or eagle eyes may have noticed that she makes a few references to her hometown in the debut work of fiction. All across the USA, people are showing up dead. The deaths don't appear to be connected in any way until one particular death occurs and gets the Secretary of Defense's attention. He arranges for a task force to investigate. But it looks like trouble has followed him with the Vandal bike gang moving their drug operation to the sunny Gold Coast. Meanwhile, Lucas has also been drawn into the case of murdered mum Siobhan Owen who was left brutally murdered and her young daughter left in a coma after a home invasion. Wolf gives the reader another fast-paced Aussie crime thriller: a wholly credible tale with that requires virtually no suspension of disbelief, and builds up to a nail-biting climax. The dialogue is convincing, with a generous helping of the Australian vernacular, and her depiction of coastal Queensland feels truly authentic. I loved the setting of Surfer’s beach by day. It’s a seaside city with its sparkling surf beaches, tourists and sunny days. But there’s also a seedier side hidden from the tourist, where violence, drugs and criminal activities thrive. Wolf’s setting is so vividly described you can practically smell the suntan lotion and salty air!

Patricia Wolf’s novel “Paradise” continues to follow the life and times of DS Sergeant Lucas Walker who is recovering from injuries he got while dealing with a killer about three months earlier. As a visiting lecturer for a serious crime and drugs training program for police officers in Queensland, he is sent to Queensland Gold Coast-based Surfer’s Paradise on a temporary basis.Paradise is recommended to those that enjoy police procedurals with humanly developed characters and the novels of writers like Garry Disher. Paradise was provided by Embala Books through Netgalley upon the promise of a fair review and is set to be published on May 17, 2023. Their search becomes ever more urgent as temperatures soar. Even if Walker does find the young couple, will it be too late? Patricia Wolf is a mystery and thriller novelist that is best known for the “DS Walker Thriller” series of novels. Before she published her debut novel she worked as a journalist for more than fifteen years. Several characters who appeared in the first book appear in the second, including members of the motorcycle gang that was producing drugs, but that story still remains unfinished. Most of the villains from the first instalment played minor roles in this book, and we received no further insight into the leak at the top—the person who is manipulating both the police and the drug dealers. They had disappeared in the neighborhood while heading to a remote cattle station where they had been offered jobs. Initially, Walker doubts that his supervisor is only interested in him helping with an investigation into a missing persons case.

Paradise: A totally addictive crime thriller packed with jaw

At the opening of the novel. Detective Sergeant Lucas Walker is in northwest Queensland at the home of his grandmother. This time Lucas is staying in a swanky flat in Surfers Paradise on the coast of Australia, I cannot give you the reason why without spoiling the plot! But all becomes clear after reading book 1! This wasn't quite as strong as the first book, it was much more predictable, I could easily figure out where everything was heading. During her time there, she coved all manner of subjects from politics, design, culture, art, human interest, and political pieces from all over the world.I liked the fact there are basically two threads to this story. I enjoyed guessing how the stories converge. Dual plots can be hit and miss, but in this case I thought it worked really well, also it ensures that ‘all important’ suspense and tension never waivers. Paradise is an evocative novel that excels in its characterisations and depictions of the seedier and violent side of the Gold Coast. Highly recommend. The B plot, the investigation of biker gang drug dealers, which is continued from the previous book, relies far too much on coincidence and unlikely interconnections. Lucas Walker of the AFP is still recuperating from the injuries sustained during his last case in his hometown of Caloodie and is awaiting the results of a review board of his actions. He's been sent to Surfer's Paradise by his superiors to work on a murder case - the victim was someone walker knows from the Caloodie case. While they he assists the local police on a home invasion and murder - Siobahn Owen was brutally murdered by burglars who had tied up and tortured her husband, their daughter was almost smothered to death as well. Lucas becomes invested in the case as he takes shift at the hospital to protect the daughter, Gabby.
