Wonderful story. Before the Disney Princess Mania started and made our young girls think that princesses just get what they want all the time. (e.g Cinderella gets to the ball, and finds a prince there) I’m trying to figure out what Prince Ronald would do if he had the same problem with the dragon and had to save Elizabeth?

These types of comments will help your child understand the story on a deeper level, and, ideally, will help your child bring this understanding to other stories that she hears.I thought about that and changed around the ending of one of my dragon stories. That made the adults a lot happier, and the kids did not mind. The original ending had Princess Elizabeth punching Ronald in the nose. When Michael Martchenko drew a picture of that it looked a bit too violent, so we changed it around and had Princess Elizabeth call Ronald a bum. Later, when Scholastic International wanted to do a book club edition for England, Australia and New Zealand they said “We can’t use bum. People in England don’t call each other bums. They just don’t do it. Princess Elizabeth should call Ronald a toad”. She’s only just turned four so the skills needed to draw are still fairly new to her and she was super pleased with her princess’s face. This story works well for highlighting CSPAR because it has an entertaining story line, a few central characters, and a clear-cut problem. It’s especially captivating for preschoolers who may be familiar with other stories involving princes, princesses and dragons.

All in all, “The Paper Bag Princess” is a brilliant book from the famous Munsch/Martchenko duo as it shows that true courage will always win the day. Although I would have preferred the ending to be a little longer so that way it would be more satisfying just knowing what happened to each character after the adventure is over, this was not a major con for me, so I would still recommend this book to children ages four and up, but because of the dragon scenes, I think children ages five and older might stand those scenes better and the children ages four and up will like the simplistic writing of this book.
