About this deal

For some time, they have also sold head lamps with what is called “reactive lighting technology”. These are part of the performance collection as “Reactive” head lamps. The Nao and Nao+ were the first head torches I saw with this technology and a few friends have them. The Swift RL also includes a reactive light beam mode. I ended up on a number of occasions “sharing” the beams of the dimmed Swift RL and the lower lumen output of a friend’s head torch. Range: Brightness isn't the only factor that's important. You'll also want to consider the distance ahead that the light will illuminate, known as the range. Again, this is going to depend on where you're running and how far ahead you want to be able to see.

For the fast-paced things like cycling and running, it’s been used in a mix of remote landscapes with few obstacles all the way to busy woodlands where avoiding low-hanging branches is crucial. The thought behind the Swift is that you have two headlamps in one, a light/bright “standard” headlamp or a light/bright/extended burn time reactive headlamp, but I don’t think I’ll use the reactive mode as much as I had hoped I would. The plate is compatible with accessories that allow you to install the headlamp on a helmet (HELMET ADAPT adhesive plate for a variety helmet types, or SLOT ADAPT for helmets that have a compatible slot) It’s smart reactive lighting, which we’ll talk about more in the ‘Features’ section’, also makes it a nice bit of kit for twilight walkers and wild campers. Features Casting 1100 lumens at a weight of only 100 g, SWIFT® RL is the ultimate multi-sport headlamp for all your outdoor activities. Note, too, that while the Nao had the option to swap the reachargeable battery for AAA batteries, the Swift does not. You need to buy a spare rechargeable battery if you plan to use the head torch for many hours.

Petzl Swift RL head torch for runners and walkers Review: Petzl Swift RL head torch for runners and walkers

Overall, if you’re looking for a reliable, comfortable and lightweight headtorch with a powerful light, the Swift RL is a strong competitor. The Swift RL is fully charged in 6 hours and you can bring a spare battery with you. For my use, this isn’t needed, but if you’re going to be doing night-long trail runs or mountain adventures, then it’s something to think about. 6. Uses Mostly, I tend to keep the torch in reactive mode, and switched between the three levels. With this, I found the battery life to be very impressive. The Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery is powerful and helps to stop single-use batteries from being wasted. The Swift RL is home to a Lithium-Ion 2350 mAh battery, something that can be recharged via the type B micro USB port. You can also keep an eye on this via the product’s battery charge indicator. Longer burn time, greater visual comfort, and less manual operation with REACTIVE LIGHTING® mode, which allows the light sensor to automatically adjust brightness and beam pattern, optimizing battery usagePlease note that inflatables such as sleeping mats are not considered as faulty if they become punctured during use and are not covered by the manufacturer's warranty in this event.

Burn time: This is the battery life of the head torch. How long it lasts will depend on the number of lumens and setting you use. Generally, the brighter the torch, the more power is required to keep it shining, so it will burn out sooner. With an ergonomic adjustable headband, with two-part Petzl patent construction, this has a really comfortable fit and will stay fixed on your head even when you’re really moving about. Speaking of the headband, it’s reflective for heightened night-time visibility. Stuff it doesn’t have? Any sort of red light front or rear-facing – bear in mind the headband is reflective – any programmability, which I honestly didn’t miss given that I had as much or as little light as I wanted at all times. And the option of a remote battery box for really cold conditions. If you want those, look elsewhere, maybe at the bulkier, clunkier NAO+ which also has a more glove-friendly control system. Its compact and ultra-lightweight SHELL LT storage bag can also transform the headlamp into a lantern.

However, this is all detail – the fact is, the Petzl Swift RL headtorch delivers impressive performance in lighting stuff up when you want it lit up, which is the job at hand. We liked the reactive setting, which does indeed conserve battery power, but it's easy to see how it could be annoying for some applications. Petzl Swift RL head torch review: verdict I found that around camp and slow-paced movement, the 100 or 300 mode was enough. The 900-lumen mode is impressively powerful for cycling and running if there are obstacles or changes in the surface. I find trail running gives the ultimate head torch test: you need it to be tight and the constant bouncing can be uncomfortable with some head torches. The Swift RL doesn’t bob up and down on your head, or slide around. There are also no sharp or painful sensations around the strapping. The fenix is much brighter than the NAO+ even when fully charged. I've used both side by side and it's quite noticeable, both in the throw of the spot beam and the quality of the flood beam.

A reactive light beam describes how the head torch reacts to light. So if the torch sensor detects a lot of light in the area already, it reduces the beam output. The theory is that where you require less light you save on battery use. Swarovski NL Pure10x42 review: sensational high-end binoculars for wildlife spotting and spectator sports According to the charts issued by Petzl, you can save considerably on battery use and if you are a long-distance runner or someone doing a multi-day race, battery life is important.
