The version of the GI MF is fighting for simply looks like they are trying to cash in on the rising reputation and prestige of Barbados rum. (Hugely brought about by Foursquare’s Richard Seale). I can see the concern for duppy’s share (Caribbean equivalent of angel’s share) due to the hot climate but a minimum of only year of aging in Barbados? It’s clearly a selfish angle seeing as they’re the only one among the Barbados rum distilleries that has aging facilities outside of the country (MF’s Châteaux Bonbonnet). It’s reminiscent of the times when the colonists just took resources away from their colonies to make themselves rich. A resourceful manager, Alexandre Gabriel decides to sell some of his cognac casks to other producers, notably rum producers. The Caribbean and Latin American are now on his radar. Soon the region reveals dozens of unique and fascinating rum expressions that captivate the rum-maker’s attention. Each island brings its own discoveries. The rums are chosen for their struture with aromatic characteristics suited for intensive oak ageing. They say that the GI must be inclusive and faithful to the roots of all Barbados rum making. To me, that sounds like a flashy excuse for being allowed to cut corners. I am no Barbados history expert, but I am sure there were shady practices in the past of Barbados rum-making, just like every growing and unregulated industry in the past. How is rum going to get the respect and prestige it deserves if its standards don’t match up to Scotch and Bourbon? Scotch and Straight Bourbon don’t allow additives aside from water and caramel coloring. Aren’t shady practices in American whisky the reason why the Bottled-in-bond act was made?

The 1990s see Alexandre Gabriel combing the Caribbean in search of the best rums of the region. Plantation is born: an artisanal range of rums from the great terroirs of the tropics. Fifteen years of dedicated rum-making later, in 2012, Alexandre is awarded Master Rum Blender of the Year at the Golden Rum Barrel Awards and was named Distiller of the Year by The American Distilling Institute. Disappointing. So disappointing and disgusting. I am actually sad I thought very highly of them one time. If this is the future standard of Barbados rum, then I will not buy anymore Barbados rum in the future. The joy of tasting the best rums right out of the still from one island to the next is blissful. The degrees of fermentation and distillation are always unique. And this is where I saw an opportunity ! I wondered (and could taste) what my team and I could do with such varying distillations. At that moment I knew in my heart that we could perfect the methods of aging in wood casks that we knew so well from producing Cognac. Nejprve vzkřísil prodeje luxusního koňaku Pierre Ferrandapak se začal porozhlížet, kde by mohl uplatnit použité sudy. Byla by přece škoda je nechat ležet. Tak dlouho hledal výrobce rumu, kteří by je využili pro zrání svých lahůdek, až se do karibského rumu a jeho chuťové bohatosti sám zamiloval. Tak vznikly rumy Plantation. Plantation XO 20th Anniversary je nejznámější rum této značky, přičemž je věnován Alexandru Gabrielovi – majiteli a hlavnímu master blenderovi a jeho 20 letům v této funkci. Takže ta 20 tka v názvu rumu neoznačuje věk rumu, jak si mnozí myslí. Podobně jako všechny rumy Plantation, i tento zraje nejprve v Karibiku a poté ve Francii.
