The perfect go-to film, there is little not to like about this emulsion. Portra 400 offers excellent colours, it is fast enough for the most situations, and even though it is 400 ISO, it still produces high quality and fine-grained results. Outdoors with a flash bounced off of a wallThis entire session was done with the Sigma 85mm f1.4. As you can see, the flash output really helps here due to adding more daylight white balanced output to the scene. At the same time Vericolor VPL was replaced by that Ektacolor tungsten film, Vericolor VPS was also being killed off to make way for the new Portra NC – or natural colour – films, which were available in 160 and 400 speeds.

Here’s what the film looks like as the sun is starting to sort of set in Brooklyn, NY, and the clouds are rolling in. The colors are still nice and muted. But see how the sun gives a really nice rim light to Rory’s hair? While I enjoyed the more vibrant results I got from the likes of Kodak’s Ultramax and Ektar films, the paler Portra photographs are very good too. It’s Vericolor II that brings us to the Portra era, with the VPL one first being replaced by a short-lived Ektacolor Pro Gold 100T film in 1998. A year later, this was rebranded as Portra 100T, a film that was discontinued in 2006.If I had a special occasion to shoot or a trip or holiday that I wanted to save on film, Portra would be high on my list of candidates for the job. I think it’d give me results I’d love. Exposing this film at ISO 200 and developing for 320. This way it gets more light but not an excessive amount. A lot of my recent work has been shot in these conditions. For the sake of this article I’m going to consider sunset and sunrise to be the time when direct sunlight is no longer on the foreground or subject, but the clouds in the sky are lit up with color. This light condition can happen as much as 20 minutes before sunrise or after sunset, and the further the sun is below the horizon the more even the light tends to be. The stellar dynamic range of this film makes shooting in these conditions a breeze, but if it’s possible I’m still going to use a soft GND filter to even out the exposure and retain the sunset hues that make the skies so beautiful. When it comes to exposure on Portra (and most negative film in general), once you scan the film you’ll find that your exposure choice doesn’t have so much to do with retaining detail but it does play a huge role in how much color saturation you’ll have. Overexposed negatives have softer colors and underexposed ones will have more saturation and eventually get severe color shifts in very deep shadows. Even using a one or two stop soft GND filter can help you retain some of the richer colors in the sky, but they will always be somewhat subdued on Portra.

Whether it’s a price worth paying is up to you. If you haven’t shot it before, I’d recommend you try it at least once. I could see myself using multiple rolls for a project too, to take advantage of its quality. and large format look better due to more emulsive surface area. It’s the same idea with small point and shoot sensors, your phone sensor, etc. Additionally, there are other things that play a part with the optics here. I actually think that Portra 160 does a better job with indoor portraits where as Portra 400 is wonderful outside. As for pushing film, pushing is when you rate the film HIGHER than the box speed and then have it pushed in development to compensate for the underexposure. And that’s kind of where I’m going with this.As someone who shoots film, doesn’t develop it myself, and likes to get good results, that’s more the kind of stuff I care about. Kodak can worry about how they make the film. I’m just very grateful that they do. Rating at ISO 200 and metering for the shadows or midtones will give beautiful, warm colors and natural skin tones. With a wide range of exposures from bright light to low-light situations, you can create photos that are precisely how you want them. Portra 400 is an iconic 35mm film that captures the honesty of life's moments with beautiful results every time!
