Description

Manage by exception is an important PRINCE2 principle that establishes delegation of authority for decision-making (to the project board), managing (to the PM) and delivering (to the team) in the project. If something goes wrong in a project, everyone must know about it so they can fix the issue before it gets worse. Project boards make sure everyone knows about problems before they become big problems. Planning: In this stage, you'll create your scope statement and business case, identify the risks associated with your project and then determine how to mitigate them. Your result can be given to you immediately by your training company, but the result is provisional. The paper will be re-marked by the exam authority for the final result. If the word ‘method’ spooks you, that’s understandable. The very mention of a method makes some people break out in a cold sweat, reminding them of their worst nightmares, fighting through a mesh of never-ending administrative procedures and struggling up a mountain of paper. One senior manager in a large organisation asked us about PRINCE2 because she’d heard the name and wondered what it was. But as soon as she heard PRINCE2 is a method she flatly refused to hear anything more about it.

PRINCE2 cheat sheets help you understand the exam preparation method and to refresh your memory during revision. PRINCE2 exam is not that tough, and you can achieve good marks through thorough preparation. Getting through this exam depends on your preparation method and how well you grasp the concepts. You must have seen newspaper reports of projects that have gone wrong, resulting in a waste of money, lost opportunities and disappointed people. The big question is: ‘Do projects have to be like this?’ The short answer is a resounding, ‘NO!’ That’s a pretty bold statement given the scale and complexity of some projects. But the fact remains that the underlying causes of project failure are generally very well known – and, interestingly, so are strategies to prevent those problems and to help plan and control projects more effectively. The last of the seven processes covers closing down the project. This can be the planned close or an early or premature close. You may shut down early if, for example, business circumstances change and you no longer require the project.Unrealistic finance: They were never going to be able to do a project of that size on such a low budget. If you’re considering a gap, how long should it be? Well, about a week is ideal. A month is fine. But after a couple of months, you’ll start to be at a disadvantage rather than having a benefit. After about two months, although you’ll have had more time to revise and practise, your speed of recall of information from the course will start to diminish. If you need to start looking a lot of things up in the manual because you can’t quite remember them, you’re in for timing problems in the exam and are more likely to fail. Getting your certificate(s) The end stage of a project is when you have completed all the tasks required by your client and have delivered the final product or service. When this happens, you need to formally close down the project and hand over responsibility for it to another team or department within your organization. If you need a book that explains to you PRINCE2 concepts in an easy-to-understand format this will be an apt choice for you. Poor communications: Nobody knew what they were supposed to be doing or what anybody else was supposed to be doing, and people were unsure who they should report to and who could make decisions.

Builds in auditing of the project to make quite sure that everything is running well and that management information about the project is accurateAt Foundation, it’s rare indeed for anyone to fail, provided they’ve prepared properly, and most pass with strong marks. The exam authority intends that nearly everyone should pass this exam, but don’t imagine that means the questions will be easy. The acceptance of a high pass rate is in the context of everyone preparing thoroughly.

The Foundation Certificate is intended to show that you understand the terminology of the method and the how all the elements of PRINCE2 work, for example how themes are used during projects, and also how the elements work together. For example, how does the principle of ‘manage by exception’ fit into the processes? The PRINCE2 approach to project management involves three key elements: the baseline, records, and reports. You may have heard some bad things about PRINCE2; that PRINCE2 makes a mountain of paper, that it’s only for very big projects, that it only fits very formal projects. None of that is right and when you read this book, you’ll soon see why. Fully updated with the 2009 practice guidelines, this book will take you through every step of a project - from planning and establishing roles to closing and reviewing - offering practical and easy-to-understand advice on using PRINCE2. It also shows how to use the method when approaching the key concerns of project management, including setting up effective controls, managing project risk, managing quality and controlling change. PRINCE2 allows you to divide your project into manageable chunks, so you can make realistic plans and know when resources will be needed. PRINCE2 For Dummies, 2009 Edition provides you with a comprehensive guide to its systems, procedures and language so you can run efficient and successful projects. When you have the structure of PRINCE2 clear and then hang on the detail, it just becomes the way you run projects. You find that your concentration turns away from what the method is and on to how you’re going to use it on your next project (or if you react like some of the delegates on my courses, how you wish you’d run your last one!). And even if you have a lot of project management experience, you may still find the framework in this chapter helpful before you get into the detail. Monitoring & Controlling (EVM): The fourth stage is Control & Close Out Phase, which involves completing all deliverables properly before handing them off to clients or other stakeholders who may want to use them late. Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2 is especially relevant for professionals who want to understand the 2017 update in PRINCE2 methodology. The 2017 update focuses on scalability and flexibility. The problem is that although most people can come up with most of the answers for themselves, they seem to think they don’t need to apply these sorts of project disciplines on ‘this project’. On ‘this project’ we can get away with it. Wrong, because obviously all failed projects were ‘this project’ to somebody. To have the best chance of project success, taking these actions has to become automatic, the way the organisation does projects.
