Reception was excellent on our test route, with no drop-outs. The Pure also has Bluetooth to connect your phone to play music (including streaming services such as Spotify), but will not allow you to make hands-free calls like the Kenwood. It would have been in with a chance of winning if it hadn’t been so pricey. If you’re looking for a more discreet way to listen to DAB, then the AutoDAB USB is virtually invisible once installed. Rather than using a separate screen, a small box connects to your car via its USB port. This allows you to scan through stations and select them using the car’s infotainment system, even via the steering wheel remote controls if fitted. If this setting is not available, to carry on using Highway you’ll need to tell your car to forget your iPhone. How many phones will Highway support in hands-free mode? This DAB adapter is easy to install, but you can pay to get a professional from somewhere like Halfords to install one for you if you’re unsure about how to do it. You can either hook up the aux cable or choose an FM frequency for the Pure 600 to transmit over. It defaults to 87.60 FM but can be configured however you choose. Using FM worked fine for us in testing – just tune the existing in-car FM radio to that frequency of the Highway 600 and you’re all set - but an aux-input is a better bet if possible, since it's not prone to interference.

On the down side though, the main unit comes with 2 AAA batteries, so doesn't get plugged. I knew this from the outset before I bought it anyway. Whilst connected to the pure Go mobile application, the Go button can be used as the `hot key` to trigger your chosen music on demand service and identify music. You will notice Highway will play for a minute or so, then the car will take control, so the audio from Highway goes silent. Good in high strength signal areas, but it tends to become a little patchy outside of densely populated areas. So anyone interested in adding dab to there car I can highly recommend the Pure Highway. But some relatively young cars still didn’t have DAB fitted at the factory, and changing the entire stereo for an aftermarket system is expensive and could lose functionality from a built-in infotainment system. The Pure Highway 400 is one of the best DAB/DAB+ car adapters available in 2017. It’s relatively easy to fit, looks smart and offers better sound quality than you’d get from FM. However, the reception isn’t as strong as it could be, and the adapter is fairly expensive. Alternative adapters to consider The easiest way to enjoy DAB digital radio, Bluetooth music streaming from your mobile and hands-free calling in your car, this clever audio adapter is simple to fit and works seamlessly with your existing in-car audio system. The main difference over the Pure Highway 400 also tested here (below) is the addition of a separate microphone and phone connection option, allowing high-quality Bluetooth calls.
