Education Shed Ltd, Severn House, Severn Bridge, Riverside North, Bewdley, Worcestershire, UK, DY12 1AB This book helped me understand what it was like to be discriminated against, and at some points I experienced emotional outbreaks – crying in sadness, shouting in anger and more. Matthew was the first human to reach the North Pole and he did it for his ex-captain and good friend Captain Childs who had recently passed away. After losing Captain Childs, Matthew joined another crew ( Katie Hines under the watchful eye of Officer Peary) and was a cabin boy, this was the crew that took him to the Frozen, yet beautiful, North Pole. Along the long and what seemed like endless journey, Matt learned how to speak fluent Inuit, a foreign language. He also learned how to drive dogs on the ice and know which sections of ice were safe to cross. He learned many other things but these proved the most useful. A week of whole class reading planning for Years 3 and 4 around the theme of explorers! The planning uses extracts from 3 fantastic books; This book was very inspiring especially knowing Matthew started from nothing and had to first make some money and in the circumstances, he was in made me think about how difficult it would have been. Knowing this is a true story is truly remarkable and made me even more inspired. Sawbones won the 2014 Young Quills Award for best historical fiction for over 12s. It has been shortlisted for the Rotherham Book Award, the Salford Children’s Book Prize and the Hoo Kids Book Award.

Race to the Frozen North: The Matthew Henson Story

Use this lesson to show children a more modern explorer compared to Ibn Battuta. It is also a great lesson to show children the impact of racism - Matthew Henson only received recognition for his achievement in his later years and after his death because of it. Matthew Henson was simply an ordinary man. That was, until Commander Robert E. Peary entered his life, and offered him a chance at true adventure. Henson would become navigator, craftsman, translator, and right-hand man on a treacherous journey to the North Pole. Defying the odds and the many prejudices that faced him to become a true pioneer. This is his incredible and often untold story. and some handy recs and my top list of Historical PoC here at the Bibliomanic here and here at The Reading Fangirl Race to the Frozen North is a story which remembers the famous Matthew Henson – the first man to reach the North Pole successfully – and his lifelong struggles due to the colour of his skin. The person leading the activity should remind everyone that Matthew Henson was the first person to reach the North Pole. Explorers like him need an array of skills to help them achieve their goals. In a very different time and place, Lauren Bogle, a mixed race girl discovered by a modelling agent on a school trip to London, is desperate to escape from her boring provincial life. Her guardian is dead set against the idea, fearful of what will happen to Lauren when the work starts coming in, the cameras start snapping and the vultures start circling. But Lauren can’t see beneath the glossy photos, the expensive apartments and the charisma of it all. She can’t see she is treading a path already walked by those closest to her, a path that leads to murder, to prison and to death. However, I was not that attracted to Matthew’s stepmother: Nellie because of how she treated Matt compared to his sisters and I did not like how she beat him nearly to death for doing barely anything wrong. Each version of this Matthew Henson Reading Comprehension Activity has a reading sheet and a question sheet, and each version of this resource is differentiated based on difficulty. There are three versions of this resource, and you can determine the difficulty rating of each using the number of stars in the bottom-left corner. One star indicates the simplest version of this resource, and three stars indicates the most complex version of the resource. What is Matthew Henson best known for? Race to the Frozen North is a biographical fiction novel about the life of Matthew Henson, the first person from the USA to reach the North Pole, in 1909. Each lesson begins with an exploration of new vocabulary that children will be exposed to in that lesson.
