Miller's feature film work includes writing the scripts for the 1990s science fiction films RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3, sharing directing duties with Robert Rodriguez on Sin City and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, producing the film 300, and directing the big screen adaptation of The Spirit. I could get behind this if the story made me care about her. Spoiler: It did not make me care. Any evidence of her drive goes out the window when she sleeps with the ronin, WHO JUST KILLED ALL OF HER SOLDIERS, IN A SEWER AFTER SHE WAS TORTURED FOR DAYS. The story of Ronin is divided between two periods and locations: old Japan and future America. In the past, a nameless samurai fails to save his master from an evil demon and must make amends by dedicating his remaining life as a Ronin to hunt the demon down. In the future, the Aquarius corporation develops new technologies with the aid of super-computer Virgo, and Billy Challas, a young man born without limbs, but with tremendous psychic powers. Miller works Matt's narrating captions between the present, the past, and his dream imagery of Elektra, a fragmentation given a voiceover straight out of an old crime book, but with a heavy dose of sensitivity that never veers into the maudlin. Frank Miller’s 1998 five-issue miniseries “300” is a fantastical account of the Battle of Thermopylae told from the perspective of the warrior-king Leonidas, one of the Spartans’ greatest heroes. It’s a bloody tale of passion, pride and sacrifice that won Miller and his colorist Lynn Varley considerable acclaim (including three Eisner Awards in 1999) and underwent a successful 2006 movie adaptation. However, as is common with Miller’s work, plenty of critics were angered by the comic’s more controversial elements. Goldstein, Hilary (May 19, 2006). Ronin by Frank Miller | Goodreads

Something that I find very interesting is how original the comic is, while if you break it down, almost all of the ideas are unoriginal. The idea of an A.I. wanting free will is very old and it has been used countless times in other stories, but never in such a way. Other than this idea that's very old, Frank uses in this many ides that he has used and/or used in the future in other comics. One of these is the idea of poor, homeless people, forming a society in the sewers. Frank used this idea before, in his iconic run on Daredevil. The similarities between the two interpretations of the idea are so many that in fact the way these people look in Daredevil and in here is almost the same. Other things he used in Ronin that he also used before or after are the Neo-nazis (apparently he loves having neo-nazi supporting villains) and obviously the samurai. Many people use samurais in their stories, but there are few who love Japanese culture as much as Frank Miller. He always loves to use samurais and ninjas or in general some piece of culture from the feudal Japan. Top 300 Comics–February 2002". ICv2. February 4, 2002. In his brief career, the young artist has united huge commercial success with the kind of critical acclaim not heard since the now dim days of Steranko. Ronin is hugely ambitious, meticulously conceived, and original in execution: it looks and feels like no other comic book on the market. If nothing else, Ronin stands as a rare example of a commercial comic book that totally reflects its creator’s vision, unfogged by editorial meddling, counterproductive collaborators, or the pressures of indefinite serialization. Perhaps the most important point, Ronin is not merely a replay of Miller’s Daredevil: although there are similarities in theme and style, it is bolder, less compromised, and richer in conception. A samurai revenge epic in a sci-fi setting, Rōnin plays with expectations in fun, exciting ways. Although plagued by lazy clichés in a few spots and by several of Miller's characteristically "is this offensive?" racial/gender characterizations (spoiler: it always is) - and although the eventual plot twist is a bit hard to swallow, undoing too much of what we've liked about the characters - it's very easy to see why this now-underappreciated work was considered a landmark at the time.
