Description

It was beautifully written. So descriptive I felt like I was there with him in the scenes he was describing. I loved his relationship with his grandmother and his love for her shines through in this book. The rest of the subject matter is tough to get through. Rape, child abuse, abandonment, drugs and so much more. I have seen a few memorable children come to Canada from Caribbean countries to be reunited with families. The adjustments for the children, their fathers and mothers to living together in a new country can be very harsh. I have seen children rage like Tony did in Waubigoon. A few very troubled children came to mind while I was reading. I hated and loved every relationship of his, just as he did. I felt every moment of frustration, anger, depression, and regret. I felt every loss and every win. This memoir is important because it helps you see that life plays out in interesting ways. Every person you meet has an intricate life of their own, and who they are to you is unique. It’s special. I cannot recommend the audio book format of this enough! Hearing him read it and talk "Trini" was way better than I could have imagined it sounding had I read the words. It is also worth it to hear him sing the hymns he grew up (not a churchgoer but spent some time there in my youth and they were all familiar to me). Indians first arrived in Trinidad in 1845 and with them they bought their food which today is cooked in many homes daily.

Either that or they've left. A memoir about growing up in the sweltering heat of Trinidad, the island patois singing in my ear. Little does our narrator know that in the short time left to him there his beloved grandmother would be arming him with the tools he'd need to survive and flourish in this life - music and storytelling. The GameBoy game in the Mana Collection, Seiken Densetsu, was localized as "Final Fantasy Adventure" in the US and "Mystic Quest" in Europe. I'm completely floored that this game is getting a Switch release. I've only played the original, but it was also one of the very first Gameboy games I played. While travel abroad is not on the cards for now, this is a place you can feel the sand between your toes, and enjoy a drink as you watch the sun go down. It’s hard to believe you’re still in London. It’s a common idea to many of us, that of starting over — we do it when we move to a new place, start a new school, leave or enter a relationship. But Downing takes these transformations to new levels, mainly because they are forced upon him by a tumultuous family situation that leaves him moving from country to country and trying to heal from childhood traumas with essentially no help. Many friends helped Downing survive. Gada Jane's introduction to the art collective was an important part. Working with her on the John Orpheus project was another. Everyone needs someone who will tell them, "you are enough on your own." Yes, it made me feel better to sing. If people were watching me on stage, I must belong and be important. Right? It was a way to bolster my self-esteem. But not a very good one, because it falls apart. It became a place to process hurt. But also, I could sing for other people, and that was a miracle. It’s quite fitting that the at home food range from restaurant Limin’ Beach Club is called Saga Boy Foods, given that this is yet another chapter in owner Sham Mahabir’s ongoing saga.
