I also have found an Argentinian lava soil from Patagonia that is sold in Brazil as cat litter. People say wonders about it... You want the one that has very hard grains, it feels like rough gravel and is impossible to crush with your fingers. I didn't look closely at the spec. for the last lot I bought, but when they turned up they weren't clay at all but sawdust based, so OK for spills, but not ideal for tanks.Apparently, it has been well tried and tested cetain members of the Northern Ireland Cactus and Succulent Society, who have found it to be excellent both as purlite/grit alternative and as top dressing.
