Description

Cumbria may be better known for the Lake District than whisky but there’s now a distillery producing the good stuff. Taste: Medium body with medium sweetness. Vanilla, light touch of coffee, creamy, hints of ashes. Mild ginger and white pepper. With that in mind, they have recently released their first peated expression, Scapa Glansa. The name comes from Old Norse for shining storm laden skies and captures the unique history of the isle of Orkney, with its Viking past as well as the stormy spirit inside the bottle.

Scapa Skiren / Scapa Glansa | WhiskyNotes review Scapa Skiren / Scapa Glansa | WhiskyNotes review

A rare single cask 1980 distillation of Scapa from independent bottling company The Scottish malt whisky society titled "What a way to start the day" implying that this would make a perfect breakfast whisky? Nose: Vanilla with a little bit of an attitude. Somewhat dusty. With time it turns more sweet. Light notes of icing sugar, and hints of red berries. Really appealing. No hints of smoke really, but there's some chocolate and mild coffee notes here. But if you fancied staying in for your well-deserved tipple, or just wanted a crib sheet of whiskies to try for a later date, we’ve got you covered. Scapa Glansa arrives in a nice display box (not shown) which piques the interest of the consumer. There is just enough information on the box to keep that interest growing, and inside the box the whisky is held in a medium tall bottle with attractive labeling. The bottles are closed with high density cork stoppers which give me that nice satisfying ‘pop’ when I open them. In the Glass 8/10

Palate: Peach and ripe flavours and creamy caramel toffee and vanilla balanced perfectly with soft smoke. The 'radio 2' of whisky, nothing wrong with it and nothing special either. Quite enjoyable in fact. There are plenty of peaches and apples with the tell-tale zest of oranges and lemons. These give way to an oaky flavour that brings in some caramel and vanilla charm. The tang and the smooth caramel come together perfectly and also contribute to an easy-going mouth feel. The Scapa Glansa first matured in 1st fill American oak casks before being finished in casks that previously held peated whisky. The result is the first ever (lightly) peated whisky from Scapa. The bay of Scapa Flow lies with the Orkney Mainland to the North and South Ronaldsay and Hoy to the East and West respectively. The bay is of considerable historic significance, having been a naval base for the British fleet during both World Wars. During the First World War, the Grand Fleet employed the bay as their Northern base and during the Second World War a German U-Boat entered the bay and subsequently sank the HMS Royal Oak. Light, Young, Waxy, Sweet and Fruity. A few Floral notes as well. The influence of the Peated Whisky cask Finish is rather limited. The Fruit Flavours are a bit Artificial like in Candies. Here's Why You Should Visit The Remote Orkney Islands". www.whiskyadvocate.com. 7 August 2017 . Retrieved 2 September 2020.Scapa Glansa (named after the Old Norse word for shining storm-laden skies) was launched in September, 2016. It was produced by a team of six persons (including the Master Distiller) working in the small, manually operated Scapa distillery. The expression was created by taking the signature Scapa malt, which is aged in American Oak casks, and further resting it in peated casks. To be honest I struggle to detect any smoke or peat, however it has a very pleasant balance and is well made. Price is fair, this is much better than (for instance) Highland Park 12, but obviously cannot match HP 18 which sells at 2.5 x the price. Shame Scapa is 16 no long made.
