Additionally, the touch sensitivity might need some improvement. It seems to demand a certain amount of force and accurate targeting of the raised markers (a rectangle on the left side, and two dots on the right) within the circular touch area for effective response. In Summary: The Good And The Bad Much better sound quality than previous models, but please refer to no 2 of the negatives. I have since tweaked the EQ more and it’s made it better, but at the expense of the range of bass. Trebles can feel a little strangled on the standard sound profile, with the electric guitars in Metallica’s “Ride the Lightning” sounding dampened, in favour of more weight in the drums. While the Treble Boost preset did a reasonable job at countering this issue, I found that I had the most success when I opened a custom EQ and bumped the higher frequencies up a couple of notches.

To use these the first time, open the storage pod, and a small light flashes orange and green, indicating the earbuds are in pairing mode. Hop on your device, find the Bluetooth settings, find the buds, and connect. Bing, bang, boom. But the OpenFit is not a panacea. Its radical open-ear design, which may also have inspired JBL’s Soundgear Sense, also requires certain compromises. These mainly affect the bass range, but also the midrange and treble reproduction. Although the oval diaphragm provides a surface area that exceeds that of conventional in-ears many times over, the pressure loss cannot be completely compensated for by the open design. After all, the main motivator was obviously to create a pair of sports headphones that were as compact and comfortable to wear as possible, without completely isolating you from your surroundings. The airy sound reproduction seems to be more of a collateral benefit here. The Shokz OpenFit require a little consideration With the open-ear design, you don't have to worry about ear fatigue associated with traditional earbuds. The earbuds fit snugly over your ear and won't slip off, so you won't have to worry about them being too big or too small for your ear canal. The earphones look like they will be dangling a bit, but that is not the case. The over-ear hooks are sturdy enough that you can even go for a very energetic run without fear that they will come loose or fall off. They don’t fit as snugly as bone conduction headphones but won’t fall out easily. The wind can be a bit disruptive during a high-speed cycling session, though. A common concern is, will I be able to wear them with glasses or sunglasses? The answer is “yes”, just as with Shokz’s bone conduction headphones. Since most Shokz headphones are also intended to fit over the user’s ears, the company perfected the art of making its over-ear hooks stable without compromising comfort. I had no issues wearing them with my sunglasses. The Technical Aspects Of Shokz OpenFit The same can be said for noise leakage. I was surprised at how little people around me could hear considering the open-ear design, but they could still hear noise. For most scenarios, a little bit of leakage won’t matter. If you want these buds to cater for all day wear, you’ll need to consider whether they’re going to suit a super quiet office environment.

In combination with the already mentioned pressure-free wearing comfort, this results in a total work of art that solves not all, but many essential problems of headphones. With the Shokz OpenFit, you always stay a bit connected to your environment and enjoy a sound that is remotely reminiscent of speakers in a room. Thus, the Bluetooth open-ear makes head-fi culture quite a bit more attractive for anyone with chronic headphone phobia. I wore the Shokz OpenFit earbuds every day for two weeks and had the opportunity to test them in various environments. The Shokz app is simple and easy to use. You’ll find info about the battery left in the buds, as well as an option to tweak the EQ settings here, which is handy if you want to play around with the sound a little or try out one of the presets – I liked the Bass Boost setting. I also accidentally pushed the buttons a lot. The buttons themselves are unreliable; sometimes they’re sensitive enough that readjusting my hair can stop a song. Other times I can determinedly tap “skip” several times at a stoplight without any result whatsoever.

The Shokz OpenFit is also designed with hygiene in mind. Traditional earbuds can accumulate dirt, sweat, and bacteria over time, impacting the audio quality, and leading to potential ear infections or discomfort. The OpenFit combats this with minimal maintenance and an IP54 water resistance rating.Lab.

The OpenFit’s sound quality is surprisingly good. Because it’s air conduction, it doesn’t suffer too much from the issues that plague bone conduction headphones. The earphones have excellent bass response thanks to Shokz’s proprietary OpenBass technology, though it’s not entirely on par with other premium earphones like the AirPods Pro. Utilizing bone conduction or DirectPitch™ technology, these open-ear earphones transmit sound to your ear canal without obstruction. This means you can enjoy your favorite music while remaining aware of your surroundings.

Each earbud weighs 8.3g, so heavier than a pair of Apple AirPods Pro 2 and uses what Shokz calls a Dolphin Arc earhook design, wrapping a flexible hook over the top of the ear to keep it securely in place. Those are attached to what are speakers that fire sound towards the ears. The earphones can be used independently as well. They sit securely outside the ear canal, with the soft plastic band wrapping over and behind the ear lobe. This makes them very secure as well. I wore them running, and they don’t budge. They are IP54 water-resistant, so sweat or light rain should be no problem. Battery life is the one arena in which the OpenFit trounces the OpenRun Pro. The OpenRun Pro have a decent 10-hour battery life for everyday use, but I still have to charge them every three or four days, which is a little annoying if you’re used to workout buds with a charging case. The OpenFit have seven hours alone and 28 hours when used with the charging case, which is excellent, even if the case can’t be charged wirelessly. The introduction of an app and an equaliser is a great addition. I made my own profile immediately, which suited my taste and music preferences. I found it very easy to navigate and use. There's no wireless charging for this case, sadly, which is a bit surprising at this price, but USB-C means charging it up is still very easy.
