The claustrophobic foreboding that has been created by the author was simply brilliant. The sounds, the description of the town and its people, the atmospheric thrill give a gothic vibe that was mind-blowing. But there were parts of the story, like in the middle, that lost its grip on me. It doesn’t matter thou, honestly, even the unveiling of the mystery didn’t seem important whilst reading, coz the author mesmerizes you with his story-telling. The whole uneasy unsettling dark aura that Greg Buchanan creates in his debut is worth a read and for that alone, I am going with 3.5 stars. Here is a literary thriller unafraid to take chances, bending genre rules to its will” - New York Times Illmarsh is a town that feels forgotten. It added to the atmosphere. I could picture the town on the coast very well, and Greg Buchanan evokes a real sense of place in his writing. Sixteen Horses is a very immersive book. It will definitely appeal to you if you’re a fan of Chris Whitaker.

Animal Rising, the Extinction Rebellion offshoot group, sent its “deepest condolences” to Hill Sixteen on Sunday, but then immediately warned the chaos caused on Saturday was “just the start” of planned disruption this summer. Telegraph Sport understands greyhound racing events are likely to be targeted next – but other major racing events are not part of the current plan. Unlike anything else you'll read this year, Sixteen Horses is a deeply disconcerting ride. Irresistible' - Val McDermid, author of Still Life

Nearly all Saturday’s drama happened early on during the first circuit with eight either falling or unseating at the first two fences. In the previous nine years there were a total of 17 who fell or were unseated over the first two fences. Sixteen Horses, Greg Buchanan’s debut novel is affecting, challenging, haunting and compelling and I can tell you now that he is an author to watch out for. Set in a fictional town named Ilmarsh on the English coast, Sixteen Horses is a novel about harrowing events, decay and trauma and it got firmly under my skin. In the weeks that follow, investigators uncover evidence of a chain of crimes in this community: disappearances, arson, and mutilations, all culminating in the reveal of something deadly lurking in the ground itself. And as the town panics, not everything in Ilmarsh is as it seems. . . Dark days follow, then Cooper finds herself working with local police detective Alec Nichols to uncover a frightening mystery. I’m being generous with the second star. The entire first half is unbearably gruesome with details of how the eponymous horses are killed. Horrid stuff.

They were arrested on suspicion of a number of offences including conspiracy to cause public nuisance, obstructing highways and possession of controlled drugs,” officers added. Gone to the horses instead of the dogs a sea side town on a mountain of madness from 16 horse heads to poetry, lost people, this no All creatures great and small style vet story. In the village of Ilmarsh, 16-year-old Rachel Cole discovers a gruesome sight while walking her dog in one of her family’s meadows. This is one of those towns where if you scratch the surface you uncover dark behaviours and secrets. Ilmarsh is filled with people who have something to hide and nothing is quite as it seems. I was transported to the town, I could hear the music blaring from the amusements, smell the fish and chips and feel the rain battering against my coat. An increasingly unreliable narrator throws shadows and doubt over what we’re reading and the mystery is less, what happened to the horses, and more, what on earth is going on in Ilmarsh?
