Interesting psychological thriller that kept me engaged until the very end! I thought it was a rather unique plot as it begins with the main character “waking up” to see her own funeral. The facts of her life were slowly unveiled. The timelines move randomly but the details make it easy to follow. TW: SA, domestic abuse, depression, self harm, and likely a few others. Please be aware before reading the book.

It is heart wrenching to see their marriage deteriorate under the burden of grief, sorrow and guilt. They can't seem to hang on to each other and draw strength from their marriage and their experience of being Darla's parents. While Darla sounds like a sassy teenager and refers to herself as a "dead white girl," she realizes she can't move on until everyone she loves lets her go. Their visits through the portal bring them teetering along a tight-rope of fantasy and reality, where they don't always believe what is in front of them, not even their feelings for each other.I absolutely loved how likable and relatable both Thomas and Maura’s characters were. Maura’s inner dialogue had me laughing and also portrayed such accuracy for dating in the mid twenties- slightly awkward and sarcastic demeanor.
