About this deal

If the introduction to this blog didn’t already convey my bias for the new 5KX Pepsi over the old SKX Pepsi, then surely by this point it’s more than clear. I also believe it’s justified. Home to a plethora of limited-edition timepieces, the Seiko 5 Sports collection is also brimming with brilliant collaborations. One such collaboration is with the streetwear brand, HUF. Launched with two iterations of the 5 Sports, the HUF Limited Edition is a vibrant addition to the collection. When the SKX was discontinued in 2019, a direct replacement to the SKX009 was introduced: the Seiko 5 Sports SRPD53K1. I have no doubt that the Pepsi diver you prefer will depend exclusively on your own personal taste. This sounds obvious but allow me to elaborate. The bracelet’s surface finish matches that of the case; that is to say, it is satin-finish on top with mirror-polished sides. This can also be said of the deployant clasp that itself has a double push-button release system as well as a “fold over” component. These leave few doubts that once the watch is on your wrist, no unintended motions will be able to take it off.The bezels of both the SKX009 and the SRPD53 feature a Pepsi motif where the majority of the bezel is a dark blue color while the segment from minute 0 to minute 20 on the diver’s scale is in red. Both feature silver numerals, though the SKX009 possess full 60-minute graduations and a luminous pip at the top index, neither of which are present on the 5KX Pepsi. Unfortunately, this new feature came at a cost – the crown no longer screws into the case. This decreases the depth rating of the SRPD53 to 100m or 330ft of depth. In my experience, this degree of waterproofness is plenty though some have taken it as a sign of poor execution on behalf of Seiko. I couldn’t disagree more. Another significant upgrade encountered in the SRPD53 is the machine beating within – the Seiko 4R36 self-winding movement. This is an automatic caliber with 41 hours power reserve and 24 jewels. The accuracy is rated to +45s/-35s per day which I find appropriate for a timepiece in this price category.

Likewise, you’ll see I’ve used pictures of both an SKX009J and an SKX009K. These are the two reference numbers for the Made in Japan (J) and non-Made in Japan versions (K), respectively, of the SKX009 Pepsi. Once more, the differences are merely aesthetic. Like all other 5 Sports models, this 5KX Pepsi boasts a satin finish on the top part of the case and lugs. Contrasting that brushed finish are the high-polish case flanks and crown guard. For over 50 years, Seiko 5 Sports has delivered consistently high levels of reliability, durability, performance and value, endearing them to lovers of mechanical watches worldwide. Watch sizing can only be generally carried out on watches with metal bracelets, steel, titanium, gold, etc. It’s likely that the dial will be the characteristic that most polarizes collectors. With the blue sunray dial, the look of the Pepsi diver strays from utilitarian dive watch into the jewelry segment thanks to its luster and delicate finish. While both the SRPD53 and the SKX009 are Pepsi Seiko divers, there is a clear difference in design ethos from one to the other. The SKX009 was designed to look like a professional diving instrument; towards this goal, its dial is less flashy or ornate and the OEM rubber strap is stiff since it is undoubtedly intended to be worn over a diving suit. The Seiko 5 SRPD53 has a case that is virtually identical to that of the SKX it replaced. More specifically, the dimensions are: The SRPD53 also has lugs holes, a feature that can at first sound trivial. However, these are vital for a watch as versatile as this one where you could theoretically use a different strap each day of the week. With the lug holes, you can change straps in less than a minute and avoid the lug scratches that many watch collectors already know and dread. Based on the information provided so far you could be approved to pay p/m at 0% APR representative or p/m at 9.9% APR representitive. Very well written review MR. Dominguez. A very nice watch in its class. It is not an upper end luxury time piece nor is it trying to be. It’s comfortable, functional and the case, bezel, dial and accompanying bracelet are very appealing to the eye without over doing it. The fact that the crown does not screw into the case was not a deal breaker to me as I have no plans taking it underwater. Others may find fault with that omission in its design though.

Even if it did cost more, the Jubilee bracelet option was a clear winner not only because it looks much better than the rubber strap, but because it is much more comfortable to wear. It wouldn’t be truthful to say that the SRPD53 was well-received by ardent Seiko followers. Indeed, many deemed it an inauthentic and subpar substitute for the esteemed Seiko Pepsi icon. The stainless steel bracelet on this SRPD53 is one of two bracelet options within the new 5 Sports collection, though this 3-link variety is the only one offered with the SRPD53. Interestingly enough, it is quite reminiscent of the Rolex Oyster bracelet much in the same way that many SKX models were sold on Jubilee-style bands. In the dial department is where the SRPD53 starts to shine. The watch has a royal blue dial with a sunray texture that radiates beautifully under direct light. On the other hand, in the shade, the dial is closer to a deep blue tone that is just as appealing.

In its OEM condition, the SRPD53 is usually sold on a 3-link stainless steel bracelet. This band is well built and properly matches the look of the watch. After spending a couple of months with both of these watches, in the end I came to prefer the SRPD53. This was simply because the movement was more modern and the dial looked better. I can admit that I really enjoy the Seiko Jubilee bracelet however it is not enough to put the SKX009 over the SRPD53 in my view. The surface finish of the stainless steel on both the SKX and SRPD’s case is the same: high-polish case flanks and a grained finish on the top of the case. On the other hand, the lugs of the modern SRPD53 are differentiated by lug holes which the SKX009 does not possess. Pepsi Diver’s Bezel ComparisonWe are also able to offer an exchange to a different product if required, please specify this when returning your product. We understand the importance of sizing the length of your watch bracelet or strap to provide the perfect fit. Our simple to use watch sizing guide allows you to measure the size of your wrist from the comfort of your own home. Regardless, both the SKX009 and the SRPD53 have versatile enough styling that they could be put on an aftermarket strap and still look great. Indeed, many collectors did this with their SKXs and many others will likely do this with their 5KX models. If you require an extra large bracelet or you are in need of additional links these may be supplied at an additional cost.
