About this deal

A limited-edition expression aged for seven months in oloroso sherry casks, it’s bold and full-flavoured with sweet cherry and jammy dark fruits. Can be enjoyed neat, on ice or in an Old Fashioned.

Aged for seven months in Scottish Speyside whisky casks. Tasting notes include caramel, oak, vanilla and honey on an earthy agave base. Delicious served neat or mixed with ginger beer or coca-cola in a highball glass with ice and lime wedge. The Tequila Old Fashioned is a delicious autumnal drink which is a lovely change from a whisky or bourbon old fashioned. Now I am wondering if it would make a good Whiskey Sour alternative too… He bought some bottles from La Cofradia and upon returning to Scotland, shared them with his friends – serving the liquid in some fancy shot glasses he’d procured on his visit. “Everybody was asking me where the salt and lime was,” Ballantyne says, “I was trying to convince them that that wasn’t how you were to drink it. You have to drink it like a malt. It wasn’t until my wife said, ‘you know, if you’re telling people to drink it like a malt, you should put it in a whisky glass’. I did this and gave it to a friend of mine. He said, ‘Wow, that’s a really good whisky. What is that?’.” Award-winning Storywood Tequila is delighted to announce a new distribution partnership with Proof Drinks in the UK. Proof Drinks will take on all sales and distribution responsibilities for the Storywood Tequila range, which will increase Storywood’s exposure to the UK market. When Patrón announced plans to discontinue its coffee tequila, the news was followed by an outcry from fans: testament to the style’s popularity. Blending its Blanco tequila with luxury arabica coffee from the coastal region of Soconusco in Mexico, Cazcabel Coffee has a rich sweet taste, with roasted coffee joined by chocolate, vanilla and pronounced agave notes, while the finish is smooth and dry with plenty of rich coffee. It also works as an excellent espresso martini base, with no need for added sugar syrup.

In my glass: Storywood Tequila Añejo Speyside 14 is aged for 14 months in American oak barrels which were originally used for Speyside single malt Scotch Whiskey … nice blend of earthy agave and oak whiskey … it’s got a salty nutty oak finish with some vanilla hanging around. That Storywood’s journey is ultimately a team effort is reflected in the name, says Ballantyne. “Every barrel has a story to tell, and it has this crazy journey before they even get to us,” he says. “The barrels are American oak, so they’re crafted in America and filled with bourbon. Then those barrels are sent to Scotland, where they’re used for whisky. By the time we get them, they’re second fill barrels – then we fly them to tequila. It’s almost like you’re getting a slice of three different spirits in one bottle: bourbon, single malt and Tequila.” The Storywood Tequila Range

If it’s not your style, Storywood has a range of tequilas to choose from. Produced and aged in Mexico they use 10-year-old mature 100% blue weber agave which is grown slowly for between 10 and 12 years. With the natural spring waters from Volcan de Tequila, it’s twice distilled in copper pot stills, then matured in a range of cases – Speyside whisky cask and Oloroso Sherry casks. The range is intended to tempt whisky lovers to try something different. Named after the spirit’s birthplace, El Tequileño has been producing tequila for over 60 years. Since its launch in 1959, sustainability has also been at the heart of El Tequileño, constantly adapting to optimise their process and positively impact local conservation efforts. Having rested in American Oak barrels for three months, the brand’s Reposado tequila is made using agave cooked in steam pressure autoclaves. The full agave flavour is complemented by further hints of vanilla, oak and a dry finish. Best sipped neat or enjoyed in a margarita. Storywood Tequila has just arrived in the UK and, as the only tequila fully matured in whisky casks, is a genuine world first. Proof Drinks has been specialising in the import, distribution, sales and marketing of premium drinks brands since 2010 and is well placed to bring Storywood’s innovative range of tequilas to a wider UK audience, fitting nicely into their fantastic agave portfolio which includes the fast-growing Cazcabel range.

James Pattison has recently been appointed Brand Director for Storywood having previously worked at Hi-Spirits with Jeremy Hill. He started spending a lot more time over in Mexico, visiting his mum who lives in San Miguel de Allende. Disenchanted with working in the oil and gas industry, Ballantyne resolved to open a whisky bar in San Miguel, and set about planning the venue. His research led him to La Cofradia distillery in Jalisco, which has been producing and bottling Tequila for more than 50 years. There, he met master distiller Luis Trejo.

For spirit lovers who crave a taste of something new, Storywood Tequila might provide the delicious answer. This tequila is crafted from the finest 100 per cent blue weber agave and is processed according to the most carefully executed traditional techniques. To create something completely new, however, the resulting spirit is then matured in whisky or sherry barrels. Storywood also has two limited editions – the Storywood Sherry Reposado, aged for seven or more months in Olorosso sherry barrels to produce a dark tequila full of sweet cherry and jammy flavours. And a Storywood Double Oak Anejo, aged for 14 months or more in Speywide whisky and Olorosso sherry barrels for a honeyed, cherry, earth agave finish. Aged for at least 7 months in Speyside single malt whisky casks this tequila delivers a tantalizing two-sided tequila Our mission is to bring new flavours to tequila through oak. We work with distilleries, wineries, and cooperages from around the world to hunt for the freshest casks that we can get our hands on. Our oak and flavours are what we love, but its the places we go and the people that we meet along the way that becomes our story. Storywood is our chapter one with many more to come. The brainchild of Scottish chef, whisky lover and bona fide wood expert Michael Ballantyne, Storywood Tequila takes Mexico’s national spirit and treats it to a full maturation in former Speyside Scotch whisky barrels. Here, Ballantyne shares the story behind his creative Tequila range and describes the magic that happens when Speyside meets San Miguel… The Lowdown: Storywood is a tequila with the heart of Mexico and the soul of Scotland. 100% agave liquid is expertly aged in single malt whisky casks from Speyside, creating the world’s first sipping tequilas.

Aged for seven months in Speyside whisky casks with hints of oak, vanilla and honey. Perfect neat, on ice or in a Tequila Sour. The Lowdown: Newly launched, artisanal small batch Tequila from the highlands of Jalisco, made with 100% agave and the best possible materials embracing traditional methods resulting in a complex tequila with a silky long finish. This unique, super premium spirit, distilled by Maestra Tequilera Ana Maria Romero, is carefully crafted with a commitment to environmental sustainability and support for the local community. Born in Scotland and raised in Texas, the founder of Storywood Michael Ballantyne ended up in Mexico, where he came across Master Distiller Luis Trejo. Storywood tequila was born when the pair realised that by ageing tequila in a variety of used oak barrels they would be able to create unique flavours. By taking 100% agave and using the same ageing techniques more normally associated with single malt whisky, they have produced a range of ‘sipping’ tequilas. My sample, Storywood Speyside 14 Añejo was aged over 14 months in single malt Scotch whisky casks. But, ‘Old Fashioned’ with Tequila? Introduced as the world’s first range of tequilas fully matured in whisky or sherry casks, Storywood was founded by Michael Ballantyne – born in Scotland and raised in Texas. Recently launched in the UK, the project was inspired by visits to San Miguel De Ellende in Mexico (Ballantyne’s mother’s hometown), where he met Master Distiller Luis Trejo at La Cofraida. Discussing their national spirits and differences between grain, the pair concluded that whilst different, both must rest in oak to enhance the flavours. The continuous use of exclusively bourbon casks with agave spirits stood out, however, while whisky is aged in a variety of oaks to create unique flavours. This inspired the pair to combine their experience, working together on Storywood Tequila. Garnish with the orange peel twist and a couple of cherries. If you like drizzle in some of the cherry syrup for a dramatic effectThis was Ballantyne’s lightbulb moment. “I thought, ‘if I can change somebody’s perception of Tequila by changing the glass, what can I do if I put it in a single malt whisky barrel?’.” This interaction occurred in April 2015, and by September, Ballantyne had handed in his notice to go “all in” on the project. “In October, I found out we were having our first baby,” he laughs. “All this crazy stuff was happening. That’s why our tagline is ‘live free, sip slow’. You have to enjoy what you do, that’s the living free aspect of the brand. And ‘sip slow’ is to communicate that Tequila should be treated with respect, just like any premium spirit.” Storywood Tequila brings an innovative approach to a traditional spirit, merging the worlds of tequila and whisky in a unique and enchanting way. Crafted in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico, Storywood is renowned for its signature method of ageing tequila in specially selected whisky barrels, giving rise to a robust and complex flavour profile that distinguishes it in the world of premium spirits. Storywood Tequila does not only stand out for its remarkable flavours but also for its commitment to sustainability and tradition. The agave is harvested by Jimadores, skilled agricultural labourers who have mastered the art of identifying and harvesting ripe agave plants. The spirit is then created using a combination of traditional and modern methods, ensuring a tequila that respects its roots while boldly stepping into the future. Did you know? All Tequilas are mezcals but not all mezcal is tequila. The Lost Explorer Mezcal is a deliciously different smoky agave spirit for the adventurous spirits wishing to try something new.
