"The London Suede – Dog Man Star". The Michigan Daily . Retrieved 21 June 2013– via Google News Archive. Butler seemed to antagonise his bandmates when he appeared on the front cover of Vox magazine under the tag line "Brett drives me insane." [17] In a rare interview, in that he only ever would do press interviews on the pretext it was about guitars, he said of Anderson: "He's not a musician at all. It's very difficult for him to get around anything that isn't ABC." [17] A despondent Anderson remembers reading the article the same morning he was recording the vocals for "The Asphalt World": "I remember trying to channel all this hurt that I was feeling and the iciness I was feeling into the vocal." [18] Butler later apologised to Anderson over the incident.

Hochman, Steve (18 December 1994). "The London Suede, 'dog man star,' Columbia". Los Angeles Times. Archived from the original on 15 February 2017 . Retrieved 15 February 2017. This distinction is both logical and illogical. Yes, it’s neat and tidy, but that doesn’t reflect the actual history. Together was after all promoted as a double ‘A’ side with New Generation, a DOG MAN STAR single. The twelve-inch and CD single also contained Bentswood Boys. Both of these were written by Brett Anderson and new guitarist Richard Oakes and both are missing from this set (as they were from the 2011 reissue). The fact is that the Dog Man Star era didn’t end with a clean straight line – there was a messy overlap with Oakes appearing on singles and of course performing on the Dog Man Star tour of 1994/5. In trying to tidy up the messiness of the division between Dog Man Star/Bernard Butler and Coming Up/Richard Oakes Suede and Edsel have created an imperfect and not a not really comprehensive summation of the Dog Man Star era. If you wanted to be provocative you could say they are guilty of rewriting history. The easiest thing to do when reviewing an album is to call the subject of your piece “A classic” or “A landmark” and all those other easy to trot out inanities. The fact is, very few albums are classic albums and even that depends on who is defining classic. There are many good and indeed very good albums of course, but few albums are complete works from beginning to end, ebbing and flowing perfectly, balancing light and shade and capturing your attention throughout. Anderson ended up recruiting the seventeen year-old Richard Oakes to replace him on the tour, and was forced to complete some of the guitar parts on his own. And, if things weren’t bad enough, Suede’s star was beginning to fall as a little-known band called Blur was running away with the Britpop crown with their smash 1994 record, Parklife. It was especially damaging as Anderson’s girlfriend, Justine Frischmann of Elastica fame had recently left him for Blur’s Damon Albarn.Suede’s sound has been compared to that of the Smiths as well as David Bowie, with many critics drawing attention to Brett Anderson’s dark and bleak depictions of British society. Bernard Butler’s guitar work also earned praise from critics, and the album has since gained a reputation as not only Suede’s best album (usually competing with their next, Dog Man Star) but also as one of the greatest records of the Britpop era. It is the only album I have ever heard where every song is 10/10 material. There are no bad moments where you think 'oh I wish they didn't do that, it would've been great otherwise'. This is an amazing achievement, considering a few months before they released one of the best songs ever made in the stand-alone single Stay Together. This album has absolutely everything. This is the Sony DADC pressing. An alternative pressing with different matrix info is here - Dog Man Star. Unlike the alternative sleeve version sold on suede webstore, this version does not include the bonus 12" vinyl of ‘Stay Together’ and the cover color is a replica of the 1994 edition. Although the album is often considered a commercial disappointment, its actual UK sales were still relatively strong. By August 1996, it had sold 235,000 copies, without all the hype and media exposure of the debut which sold 275,000. [79] However, at the same time, US sales were only one tenth of UK sales, shifting 23,000. [80] According to Nielsen SoundScan, as of September 2008, it has sold 36,000. By comparison, this is about a third of the sales of Suede. [81] It was certified as gold by the British Phonographic Industry November 1994. [2] Reissues [ edit ] In terms of actual audio the answer is, in truth, not very much. In fact, not only is there no new audio (i.e. previously unreleased material) on this new anniversary set, there is actually LESS than on the previous deluxe reissue. For reasons unknown, the five demos that appended the album on CD 1 of the 2011 deluxe are missing from this big box. To make it clear there are only two CDs in this new box and they replicate the CDs in the old deluxe minus the demos. One bit of good news is that Stay Together is the FULL unedited long version not the slight edit from 2011.In episode #150 of The XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar meets Guitar legend Peter Frampton to talk about his recent live album – Peter Frampton At Royal Albert Hall. The Drowners” earned the band a great deal of attention from the music press as a potential foundation stone in the Britpop movement. This, their debut album, confirmed that they’d earned such attention, becoming one of the fastest-selling debut albums in British history. And what's the point of trying to nail it all down with words? While those gigs last year were a wonderful vindication of Suede, and their recent three night album stop off at Brixton saw a legion of new, mainly female fans, they're never going to succeed in convincing the increasingly prosaic British population that they're worth bothering with. As with the man I saw on the Victoria Line last week, a little older than me, in office gear, eagerly pulling the cellophane off his Dog Man Star reissue as if he were 20 years younger and still wearing ladies' blouses, these are artefacts for the devoted, to be treasured and poured over. Even if their cardboard spines are a little thin. Before we look at Dog Man Star, it’s important to note Stay Together, the standalone single Suede released between their first two albums. Stay Together came out on 14 February 1994 and was a hugely surprising release that clearly marked where the band was heading. The full version of the song is 8 minutes plus beasts that twists, turns and pouts, highlighting a sound that has obviously progressed from the Suede album era. As good as Stay Together is, however, its’ two b-sides are the real stars here and are songs that would have not sounded out of place at all on Dog Man Star.
