The Deptford and New Cross area, like many of the most infamous street gang areas, was home to traditional organised crime firms preceding the Ghetto Boys. Showkey and Mdot were both members of the 814 gang and prominent artists in the drill music genre. In separate incidents, they were both murdered. Showkey, aged 16 at the time, was stabbed to death in August 2016 by rival SNR gang member Shamar. Mdot was murdered earlier in April 2016 at the age of 17, also from stab wounds.
