About this deal

Lots of murder weapons at the deli counter. So many knives. The most dangerous thing was the meat slicer, but it would be hard to turn that into a murder weapon. Too heavy, and it had a safety guard. It could probably be done, though.... Common Sense is the nation's leading nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of all kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in the 21st century. Stevie is travelling to Sunny Pines by train, because there is actually public transport in that area of the US, apparently. She considers all the train mysteries she has ever read, but thankfully she doesn’t get kidnapped. teenagers died in the forest supposedly because of marijuana, but over 30 years later, Stevie Bell is on the case!

THE BOX IN THE WOODS | Kirkus Reviews

Many mentions of bands Fleetwood Mac and Led Zeppelin. Stevie's boss drives a Tesla. Mentions of Miller beer and Ativan, the prescription drug. References to lots of sleepaway camp movies and the Stephen King book/movie Misery. The following day, Carson holds a festival where he introduces everyone to Stevie. They meet Patty at the bakery and Allison (Sabrina’s sister) at the library. Not gonna lie, Nate is my favorite. How can he not be, as a sarcastic writer who would rather hole up in a library by himself than have to actually face other people? Obviously, Nate is my spirit animal. Seeing him face the horror of children and camp was funny, not to mention his obvious avoidance of actually having to sit down and write, which I can also relate to. I definitely want more Nate.Oh. The low-fat Swiss cheese somehow disappointed. The woman bit her upper lip and consulted her phone. The recipe says low-fat Swiss, but... do you have low-fat provolone? Claire pointed toward the path. Bridget tore off in that direction, her whole demeanor screaming " J’accuse!" Brandy trailed behind her. This morning was the worst.

Come on in. Make yourself at home. But also get homey while you're walking, because it's tour time. So...yeah. This is my humble abode and the location of my unrelenting mundane quasi-punishment. It's finally Summer and for True Crime enthusiast, Stevie Bell, that means returning home from Ellingham Academy. After solving a real-life murder case at school, working at the deli counter of a local grocery store is going to be a real Snooze Fest. Yawn, indeed. The Box in the Woods is separate from the other books, but it's just as juicy and good. It continues with Stevie Bell and her friends solving cases, this time at a summer camp, where 4 teenagers were murdered in the 70s and no one has ever figured out who did it. As someone who always seems to guess the ending, I appreciated the way that The Box In The Woods left me guessing the entire time. However, when the big reveal finally came, I was a little disappointed. While it came as a complete surprise, I felt like Johnson didn’t really allow readers to solve the mystery for themselves. While still believable, the ending feels a bit whiplashed because it seemingly comes out of nowhere… like something was happening behind the scenes that readers didn’t get to experience.

the writing wasn't terrible BUT there were moments when even adult characters read like teenagers. maybe maureen johnson has been writing ya for too long because i can assure you no woman in her fifties would be talking about the "vibe she wants to give off". This is the most elaborate of the Nutshell Studies, she said. It’s called Three-Room Dwelling. Three rooms, three bodies. What’s key in this one is the blood splatter... So this was a disappointment. I expected so much from this. I loved the previous three Truly Devious books and there was no reason I wouldn’t read this. Sadly it wasn’t that good. Stevie flipped to the photo of the grandmotherly woman with the old-fashioned glasses and bun who was peering lovingly into a skull. After the giant picnic, the group of teen friends hang out on the football field. Patty and Greg argue and drives off on his bike and dies.

Maureen Johnson’s The Box In The Woods Review

I guess... The woman peered into the glass. I mean, I guess I’ll take the Swiss. The low-fat Swiss. A quarter, no... wait. I’m probably going to double it, so... well... a quarter would probably be fine. Or... So the gang reunites the solve the 4 decades long mystery and this is where I’m shutting my big mouth! Set at a prestigious boarding school in upstate Vermont, they are the perfect read for a rainy autumn day. Over on your left, you'll see a pretty good series starter, a mystery book with fun banter and completely unhinged and unrealistic characters but also an autumn-y boarding school setting. Highs and lows. It’s always a pleasure to watch smart, resourceful Stevie piece together a puzzle. Mystery fans will relish this standalone novel in the Truly Devious universe.”– School Library Journal About the book: After solving the case of Truly Devious, Stevie Bell investigates her first mystery outside of Ellingham Academy in this spine-chilling and hilarious stand-alone mystery from New York Times bestselling author Maureen Johnson. MURDER IS WRONG, OF COURSE. STEVIE’S FUTURE WAS PREDICATED on that fact. She wanted to solve murders, not commit them. To solve them, you had to understand why they’d occurred. Motive. That was the key. It was all about motive. Understand the reasons behind the act. What pushes another human being to that point of no return? It has to be a strong impulse.

The Box in the Woods Review: A Sizzling Summer Camp Murder The Box in the Woods Review: A Sizzling Summer Camp Murder

There are dialogues where the characters talk and talk and talk about the details of the murder in one long, uninterrupted soliloquy. In the third book, The Hand in the Wall, the infamous Ellingham Murders were finally solved by our favorite student sleuth, Stevie Bell. Enter to win one (1) finished copy of The Box in the Woods by Maureen Johnson! Open USA only. There will be 1 winner. Stevie agrees, as long as she can bring along her friends from Ellingham Academy. Nothing sounds better than a summer spent together, investigating old murders. In the 1970s, lots of teen pot smoking and dealing, drinking, driving drunk and high. A dad gives teens beers at a pool party. In the present, nothing.A big bold YES! This is the opportunity she’s been looking for. Janelle and Nat already says yes and David hmmm yes he’s always extra annoying who promises to join them later and wants her to keep him updated about events. I also was impressed with how Johnson wrote this one so that it could actually be read as a standalone. I have read every book in this series and would definitely recommend that, but I can see how someone could actually read this on its own. Stevie and her friends reconvene to share intel. A guy called Jason becomes a suspect but probably only for killing Todd.
