About this deal

The Burning by Laura Bates | Goodreads

I was in no way expecting to like this story as much as i did, and i can honestly say this is one of the best novels i've read in a long time.Laura writes regularly for the Guardian, Independent and TIME among others. She was the recipient of the Georgina Henry Women in Journalism award for Innovation at the 2015 British Press Awards.

It also has some historical aspects, a bit of a mystery going on, a sort-of romance that seems out of place in the story, and even vaguely supernatural elements that were honestly jarring. There's a bit of everything thrown in, most of it not needed. I really enjoyed the intermingling of the two time lines, the comfort Anna found in researching Maggie's story and the self belief and confidence she found along the way. Dealing with issues of victim blaming, casual sexism and the still very skewed way of "dealing" with things, The Burning shines a light right into the darkest corners of reality. The Burning follows Anna, who has moved to Scotland following the death of her father and following her nude photos being leaked across social media. She is in a new school, in a new town, with a new last name and she still can’t escape the rampant bullying and slut-shaming she has experienced over one photo. For a history project, Anna has to research a local person of interest and she comes across a woman accused of witchcraft and is desperate to find out her story.Bates, Laura (12 June 2015). "Queen's Birthday Honours List: Knights Outnumber Dames Five to One". The Guardian. When I was first given this book, I was pretty sceptical. The whole “bringing light to issues teenage girls face” theme is fairly common nowadays and, in my opinion, not always that great. British Council complies with data protection law in the UK and laws in other countries that meet internationally accepted standards. Laura Bates - founder of the Everyday Sexism project and author of Everyday Sexism and Girl Up - also uses subtle supernatural touches to add to the darkness throughout the novel.
