About this deal

It is a story of human (and animal) connections in uncertain times, how people can deceive themselves, and how we maintain our illusions rather than confronting the truth. It is a social commentary on the increasing artificiality of our world. I think it is particularly pertinent to our present time. Read this with my four year old nephew who laughs historically when the cave’s host is revealed. Very funny book for both of us, will be buying as a gift for another nephew this Christmas! Much of the modern scholarly debate surrounding the allegory has emerged from Martin Heidegger's exploration of the allegory, and philosophy as a whole, through the lens of human freedom in his book The Essence of Human Freedom: An Introduction to Philosophy and The Essence of Truth: On Plato's Cave Allegory and Theaetetus. [10] In response, Hannah Arendt, an advocate of the political interpretation of the allegory, suggests that through the allegory, Plato "wanted to apply his own theory of ideas to politics". [11] Conversely, Heidegger argues that the essence of truth is a way of being and not an object. [12] Arendt criticised Heidegger's interpretation of the allegory, writing that "Heidegger ... is off base in using the cave simile to interpret and 'criticize' Plato's theory of ideas". Soap was still made like that in the early 1900s. Oak is the preferred wood to burn, and either tallow (cow fat) or lard (pig fat). Rain water, or distilled as the minerals in water can either make the soap much stronger, or have other problems, is poured through the ashes creating lye. The fat takes the place of glycerin, which is often used today. Other fatty foods, like goat’s or cow’s milk can be used.Parallels between Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 and Plato's 'Allegory of the Cave' ". Archived from the original on 2019-06-06. The stories explore his learning to use magic and his centrality in the Matter of Britain.

Ray Bradbury's novel Fahrenheit 451 explores the themes of reality and perception also explored in Plato's allegory of the cave and Bradbury references Plato's work in the novel. In this novel, "The Cave," Saramago describes our world as an extension of Plato's cave. We are chained to the bottom of the cave, fascinated by the shadows cast on the bottom of the cave and convinced that it is the real world. Through this novel, I read an indictment of our consumer society, which is futile and superficial, governed by the merchants, and creates useless and mortal needs. we must never violate what constitutes the exclusive and essential character of a person, that is, his personality, his way of being, his own unmistakable nature. A character can be full of contradictions, but [it is ] never incoherent..." Cipriano Algor put the spade down and plunged his two hands into the ashes. He touched the thin and unmistakable roughness of the fired clay. Then, as if he were helping at a birth, he grasped between thumb, forefinger, and middle finger the still buried head of a figurine and pulled it out. It happened to be the nurse. He brushed the ashes from her body and blew on her face, as if he were endowing her with some kind of life, giving to her the breath of his own lungs, the beating of his own heart.” - José Saramago, The Cave

In Stewart's obituary, The New York Times described her as an "author of romantic thrillers who jumped genres in her 50s to create an internationally best-selling trilogy of Merlin books, reimagining the Arthurian legend from a sorcerer's point of view," and said, "Reading Geoffrey of Monmouth's History of the Kings of Britain, she was inspired to retell the story of King Arthur as seen by Merlin, the king's adviser and house magician. The trilogy introduced her work to a new generation and, in many cases, to male readers for the first time. ... The books, set in the fifth century, were praised for their unusual blend of fantasy and historical detail." [4]
