Description

If you have depression, don’t blame yourself or wonder if you and God have somehow failed each other. Mental and emotional health issues strike the strongest of us. King David led a nation – yet wrote some of the Bible’s bleakest laments. Naomi experienced deep emptiness and bitterness following devastating loss, and Job longed for a death that would not come. I first developed severe depression after pushing myself too hard during my final year at university. For years, I thought of myself as weak. I struggled to cope with everyday life, was often too depressed to work, and I hated myself for not being able to function like a “normal” human being. Tim Cantopher turned that view of myself on its head. He argues that those who develop stress-related depression are actually hard-working, perfectionistic people with a strong work ethic who burn themselves out. This was very true of me but in the mire of negative thoughts that’s part and parcel of depression, I hadn’t been able to see it until someone else pointed it out. People affected by depression tell me this is the most powerful and helpful book ever written on the topic. I keep meeting people who say this book changed their lives.' - Jeremy Vine, BBC Radio 2

It’s a wonder that anyone can be so strong for so long. This approach is very empowering for the individual with depression and very true to real life. It is often those that just keep going, those that are there for everyone else who eventually burn out and find themselves in the unpleasant land of clinical depression. The Strongest Curse is a 6-star unit based on the character Ryomen Sukuna, more specifically his appearance from within Yuji's mind from the series Jujutsu Kaisen. If you or someone you know suffers from Depression; Depressive Illness, The Curse of the Strong is a great tool to help educate and plan for the battle with depression. Make no mistake; Depression is a serious medical condition that cannot be ignored. Dr. Cantopher does an excellent job making the book easy to understand and informative. As the book is also in audio-book format, it is a perfect resource for those who are too tired and lethargic to read for extended periods of time. If you suffer from Depression or wish to understand Depression, this book is recommended. Many therapists have previously classified Depression as a psychological condition unrelated to biological components. Most considered depression as a product of the mind, by which medications and brain structures had no part. This viewpoint is now being abandoned and upgraded to a condition that is mostly medical by nature. Dr. Cantopher describes Depression as the burnout of the Limbic System contained within the brain. This system is responsible for the stabilization of mood and is linked to the feeling of pleasure, memory, and appetite. In Dr. Cantopher’s model, Depression (especially stress-induced Depression) occurs when someone pushes themselves beyond most physical means for extended periods of time. The politics of depression – why we as a society need to be more open, honest and have dialogue about it.

Obviously, it is just one person’s philosophy about depression and its causes and cures, so should be treated as such, but I found it very helpful. Secondly, don't struggle on alone - read this book instead. It has helped thousands of people just like you. I only have one gripe: the use of pronouns. (That's a sentence I never thought I would write). When the author is talking about suffers of depression it is almost exclusively in female pronoun (she, her), but when the author talks about misunderstanding partners, employers or people, it is almost exclusively using male pronouns. I noticed this to the point of distraction. Depression is genderless and misunderstanding persons are also genderless. Using they/them would of been much better IMHO. LOL.I'm still struggling, but with the help of this book and some insight, I hope to not only get through this depression, but come out of the situation stronger and in a better place and with a mindset that will prevent me from ever getting into this position again. Depressive Illness will explain all the above in detail, and more importantly, give you effective ways to get well and stay well. It covers symptoms, what to do when you get ill, medication, recovery, lifestyle changes, psychotherapy and problem-solving skills, including mindfulness. Psychiatrist Tim Cantopher's book is one of the most motivational self-help books I have read, and has got my 2018 goal to improve my mental health off to a great start. I found the very clear, concise, direct style extremely helpful, especially as there are so many conflicted opinions and a lot of personal guilt surrounding depression.

Depressive Illness: The Curse of the Strong: 3 (3rd Edition

It’s written by a psychiatrist. He makes clear that he is talking about the kind of depression that is ‘stress-related’ (as opposed to bipolar or other types of depression which are part of a person’s chemical make-up), which is to say that it is caused by overloading the system repeatedly until a fuse blows. This is why, he argues, depression affects the strong, not the weak – for it is they who constantly take on the burdens of others as well as themselves, until their body snaps and they develop a depressive illness.Depressive Illness – The Curse of the Strong is a best selling book all about depression by Psychiatrist Dr Tim Cantopher. This book is outstanding. People affected by depression tell me this is the most powerful and helpful book ever written about the topic. I keep meeting people who say this book changed their lives.’ Clinical depression is not a psychological or emotional state. It is a physical illness. Clinical depression is every bit as a physical a condition as pneumonia or a broken leg." The short chapters mean that the book is easy to dip in and out of. Depressive Illness covers a lot and doesn’t waste a single word.
