About this deal

Beth, a mother of one, is asked by her sister Poppy to take time out and go on a book writing retreat run by Jan Goldstein, renowned author, in Yallingup, Western Australia, a beautiful seaside area. I absolutely loved that this book was written by a local WA author and was also set in the South West of our wonderful state. Thank you to Better Reading and the author, for an ARC of this novel by Australian author, Fiona Palmer.

The Long Weekend: Life in the English Country House Between

I am quite pleased I happened to read this during a nice dry spell, because my liver is yelling a happy HALLELUJAH. Jesus Christ these people can drink. Historian Adrian Tinniswood named his 2016 book, The Long Weekend: Life in the English Country House, 1918–1939, after it. [2] Reception [ edit ] The author apparently approves of “mannerist decoration” (l. 527), “canopy á la polonaise” (l. 724) and “carved work in the style of Grinling Gibbons” (l. 953), among other things, but those of us with inadequate colonial education will have to break from the text to find out what exactly these are. In these days of instant voice search, that's not a great inconvenience, but authors should try not to drive their readers away to other distractions if possible. All of these women and their partners are hiding something and have their problems. None of them are people that I would want to be friends with. Many years ago my wife and I (we are now in our eighties) flew to Europe, rented a car and toured the famous gardens of the Continent. Our favorites were in Great Britain. As other reviewers have noted, this exploration of English history is less interested in the weekend party than the house in which that party was held. Architects, various sales, wood paneling, etc., - if those are your waters dive deeply in! The first chapter, which briefly explores what the weekend party was like (Golden Age mystery fans would be well served to do their homework and read this chapter) was the most interesting for me - but, that's another book. In short, architecture lovers should be well pleased. Adrian Tinniswood distills the milieu of the English country house as it emerges from WW I up to the time the party is over in September 1939. The book is separated into 18 or so chapters. The chapters cover topics such as "guests", "Interior decorating", games and many more. Each chapter is well referenced and the writing is clear and informative. Some of the chapters such as the choice of interior decorator or designer were less interesting than others. This is inevitable and is more than made up for chapters about guests, social mores or even country sports. There are enough stories about unique individuals to keep the book flowing and engaging. God bless the 9th Duke of Devonshire for example. In one shot he killed a pheasant, shot a retriever, its owner and his chef. Gems like this leaven the more specific history chapters very nicely. The uncertainty of the claim leaves the friends feeling out of control and tempers fragile. Each wife is desperate to know that their husband is safe and an explanation to what is going on. Which husband is in danger and who is responsible. DISCLOSURE: Thank you to Random House UK, Cornerstone, Century via Netgalley for providing a digital ARC of The Long Weekend by Gilly Macmillan for review. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own personal opinions. There's a lot of heartbreak, drama and destruction that unfolds in this story. MacMillan pulled no punches in portraying realistic actions and reactions. It really makes you stop and think how you would react if placed in a situation like that: Being isolated, not knowing if this is a hoax or if your husband is in fact dead, having to navigate this with women you're not close to and find no comfort in. (I could definitely see myself reacting similarly to Emily). The Long Weekend by Australian author Fiona Palmer is a story about four strangers Beth, Simone, Alice and Jamie, who attend a writing workshop with bestselling author Jan Goldstein. With notepads and laptops, the group is ready to learn all they can about writing, but it seems writing is not the only thing that is on the agenda as the group get to know one another it is obvious that not all is as it seems and each group member have their secrets.
