Description

I do recommend reading this book as it definitely gives you something to think about. You think about how you are spending your days living, and how you can live on once you are gone… That the beginning and the end may have been chosen for us, the string already spun, but the middle had always been left undetermined, to be woven and shaped by us.” Chaos ensues — Are the strings real? Where did they come from? The unknowns result in a divisive nature across many aspects of life — Will short-stringers be discriminated against in the workplace? In health care? How about in their dating lives?

i also LOVEDDDDD how every character was intertwined someway. it gave me LOVE, ACTUALLY (the movie) vibes and was so fun to see it play out. I think at time of writing pretty much every review of this book is five stars. So I guess I'm an outlier! But today, when you open your front door, waiting for you is a small wooden box. This box holds your fate inside: the answer to the exact number of years you will live. For some who received a short string, it was a chance to talk about, and contemplate death with their loved ones, a chance to say their goodbyes. Other ‘short stringers’ decided to just end it all, whilst some even chose not to open their box, quite happy to get on with their lives without that knowledge, to be free to be themselves. Knowing you’ll die sooner rather than later tends to make a person live life differently. In the support group, Maura argues that, “We never should have allowed them to start labeling people as ‘long-stringers’ and ‘short-stringers.’” Do you agree with her? Do you think it would create more division or strengthen community in society?

also—i cannot recommend the audiobook enough! it’s narrated by the majorly talented Julia Whelan and per usual she did an amazing job. top 5 audiobooks of all time for me without a question!Book Genre: Adult, Adult Fiction, Dystopia, Fantasy, Fiction, LGBT, Literary Fiction, Science Fiction, Speculative Fiction Rollins fuels the prejudice against short-stringers by stereotyping them as angry, mentally unstable, and dangerous. Do you think these stereotypes are used to fuel prejudice against minority groups in the real world? What other traits might be falsely used to fuel prejudice?

Book Review: “The Measure” by Nikki Erlick - The New York Times

With prejudice comes political strategy. Running for office? Show the length of your string or we won’t vote for you. Should those politicians run on platforms regarding society’s treatment of “short-stringers”? The sociopolitical issues are rampant. Zumas, Leni (2022-06-28). "How Would Your Life Change if You Knew When It Would End?". The New York Times. ISSN 0362-4331 . Retrieved 2023-07-11.The characters stories were woven together very well. I thought that their reactions to the ‘new normal’ was conveyed in a very individual and believable way. The societal reactions/discriminations would’ve felt much less plausible if the past several years had not mirrored it so closely.”
