This story is beautiful in so many ways, it’s a heartfelt romance with lots of sweet compelling moments which really tugged upon my heartstrings. It also is about two people struggling to come to terms with very significant moments in their lives, one loss and another overcoming from abuse. It made for a very powerful read, and I loved Sonny and Hannah together. To me two broken halves definitely healed each other to make them whole again. With even a short fling now off the cards, Hannah and Sonny settle for being friends. But as summer hots up and their chemistry shows no signs of cooling, they start to question their reasons for shutting each other out. Perhaps that’s why we love a rom-com so much; because while there is a familiarity to the formula, it can be tweaked, played with, inverted, and changed about in a virtually limitless number of ways, while giving us the comfort of knowing more or less where they’re headed. The first canoeing scene is fabulous in that respect, so amusing. Worldwide bestselling author Paige Toon, has more than a dozen published novels behind her but unfortunately I hadn’t yet read one, so I was keen to read one of her books after hearing such good things about her stories. “The Minute I saw You” is her latest novel and aptly named for its unique optometry theme. I’m so pleased I read this book, as although it’s no denying a romance, the powerful emotional themes running through it, makes this story so much more. I’ve never read a book which focuses on one of the issues covered and I was without doubt, caught out by the revelation of it. It broke my heart to read in places and I really can’t imagine how Hannah and her parents felt during the years gone by.

I often think it’s a shame that romance novels are often looked at with disdain. They can also contain thought provoking storylines and elements in a format that is actually more likely to reach people due to the fact that they come wrapped in the blanket of a comforting narrative where we know everything’s more or less going to be all right. At its core, The Minute I Saw You is exactly the type of read that you want to enjoy lounging somewhere in the sun, perhaps sipping a good drink. It has some lovely messages and ideas through it, is well written, and gives you exactly what you want. I enjoyed watching Hannah and Sonny get close, seeing their friendship grow and evolve throughout (without them realising how close they were actually getting). I loved the rest of the additional characters – Bertie for one will having you laughing but Matilda and Archie will prove extra special too. This book was incredible. I read it in one sitting. All the feels. The book hangover will be real with this one. Sonny is a photographer, but he is not enjoying fashion photography. His past has been full of difficult situations and now he has sworn of sex for a while.Are they both too broken to find love? And if they tear down the walls between them, will they still like what's on the other side? The premise was great. The characters were AMAZING, very well drawn and real, and the book overall was well written. I didn't mind the slow-burn, or the secondary characters that got almost as much time as the mains, or even that there were kids in it. I just kept waiting for something to happen to make me feel, and nothing really resonated. We are in a relationship,’ he snaps, making me jump. He sits up with frustration and plants his palms on the ground behind him. ‘You know that, don’t you? This is the closest thing to a relationship I’ve ever had. The only thing that’s missing is the sex,’ he adds with exasperation.
