The second half of the novel, when Auntie finds out about Cameron's "un-Christian" sexual urges and sends her away to "God's Promise" (a school whose primary purpose is to de-Gay-ify teens) is when the story really begins to soar, totally getting under my skin. Ms. Danforth's (surprisingly objective) depiction of this deprogramming school is just gut-wrenching (without being too over-the-top or reducing itself to cliche). An important book - one that can change lives' Jacqueline Woodson, award-winning author of Brown Girl Dreaming it ends on Cameron and her two best friends from the conversion therapy camp running away. The homophobes in this book do not change their minds. The development is all in Cameron herself. “Maybe I still haven't become me. I don't know how you tell for sure when you finally have,” Cameron tells us at the end. Problems are not gone, but she finally understands that she is not the problem. This novel can come off very slow-paced, and I understand that being a challenge for some readers. But I felt that this was a positive because it really dove into every possible nook and cranny and I came out (no pun intended) fully satisfied after reading this novel. And as I said, this novel reads like a classic, meaning the author is definitely skilled and talented with her words.

I guess the "we" she was speaking of included Irene, but maybe she meant Mr. Klauson. "We're not going to stop trying though, okay, Cam?"But that relief doesn't last, and Cam is soon forced to move in with her conservative aunt Ruth and her well-intentioned but hopelessly old-fashioned grandmother. She knows that from this point on, her life will forever be different. Survival in Miles City, Montana, means blending in and leaving well enough alone (as her grandmother might say), and Cam becomes an expert at both. Honestly, it's sort of ridiculous that Common Sense Media has rated this book as 5/5 for sex, because even though the main character has a sex a few times, it is never explicitly described, usually just skipped over. The Miseducation of Cameron Post is an important lesbian coming of age novel, and I have seen movies with real explicit sex scenes and/or nudity amongst straight people, that were only given 3/5 for sex. Titanic, which has a naked woman and a sex scene is rated 3/5 and 13+, and if the love interest was a girl then maybe it would be 18+ and rated for too much sexual content. Bridesmaids has a noisy, explicit, awkward sex scene with innapropriate statements bouncing mostly naked people. If those people were both men or women, I bet it would be rated much differently then a. 3/5. There is some swearing, self harm, and disturbing themes ( eg conversion therapy), but overall a great read. Maybe more 14+, but I wanted to lower the ridiculously high age limit. I grinned a big grin, a grin that would have embarrassed me, I know, if someone had shown me a mirror right then.

Even with such a hot-button topic, however, it somehow manages to refrain from outright condemnation of those who oppose its views. It's a shame that twenty years after the events of this book, this type of tolerance is still not entirely a two-way street. And I care so much about the side characters!!!! I want another book about Irene Klausen and one about Coley Taylor (MY WHOLE HEART WANTS THIS) and one about Aunt Ruth and and and ALL THE BOOKS, EMILY M. DANFORTH. WRITE ALL THE BOOKS. I like almost everything about this book even though in some parts I got bored because I was just too tired to read ( I was so busy lately). The beginning already caught my attention. Man, how could you handle such a terrible news. And you thought it was because of you. The characters are never explored completely, but instead we sort of receive snapshots of them at specific points This was very interesting to me, especially since the characters were fairly diverse and dynamic. Cameron's friendship with Jane and Adam is one of the book's best features. Gender issues aside -- and they are, of course, prominent here -- this book will resonate a good deal with readers who appreciate the rewards of finding friends with whom you truly have something in common, especially if you've felt out of place for a long time. I tend to be a patient reader and maybe it get interesting at the end, but when neither the narration, nor the characters, nor the story get my interest I just think it's better to stop. Other readers have said words like "heavy" or "dry" to describe the writing and I have to agree. Maybe other people will love it, but it's not my case.
