About this deal

Told from the point of view of each woman, their plight pulls you in from the start, and continues to keep you engaged as they find their own paths through the devastation. These women feel like real people, not manufactured for fiction, and it would take a hard-hearted reader to not empathize with middle-aged Eleanor and thirty-something Claire. They are at such different stages of life - one with adult children, the other with youngsters barely past toddlerhood - which makes the similarities and differences of their challenges all the more engrossing.

The Other Wife review: Michael Robotham and the father of all The Other Wife review: Michael Robotham and the father of all

This book kind of gave me isolated thriller vibes too, which I love! Even though this isn’t technically an isolated thriller, there were some aspects, like the fact it was mainly set in the middle of nowhere with a high chance of being snowed in at any point, it kind of gave me No Exit vibes at points! Secrets are uncovered and lives put at risk as Joe tries to find out ‘whodunit’; but – just as interestingly – Robotham offers some great texture to this tale via stuff extraneous to that plot, particularly through Joe’s his younger daughter Emma, who’s still grappling with the death of her mother over a year earlier. Something seems to break inside of me. Perhaps it is several things, tolerance, balance and decency, all of them unravelling and transforming into one thing. Rage. I want Mum to be angry. I want her to feel like I do. Betrayed. Humiliated. Abandoned. p 134 The world stops making sense for Eleanor. The same happens to Claire, less than forty miles away. Claire is a young university professor, in her early thirties and fell in love with Richard, head over heels, when they met.And who is the strange woman crying at William's bedside, covered in his blood - a friend, a mistress, a fantasist or a killer? The Other Wife by Claire McGowan is a twisty domestic thriller with a cast full of unlikable characters. We see through the perspectives of 3 women: Nora, Suzi and Elle. We know Nora and Suzi are neighbors, but we are trying to guess how this separate woman, Elle, fits into the mix. Unfortunately, I guessed how the 3 women were all interconnected, which removed the element of surprise. But at the end, there were more twists that I didn't see coming, which kept me hooked to the story. I still would recommend this one! 4/5 stars. The storytelling is thoughtful and heartfelt, building towards a dramatic chain of events that results in the long-anticipated meeting of the two women. Michael can most often be found working in his ‘pit of despair’ (basement office) on Sydney’s northern beaches where he funds the extravagant lifestyles of a wife and three daughters.

Those Russian women, they knew how to deal with the cold, and that was by throwing all sense of fashion out the window and essentially going out dressed as a bed”. Eleanor was married to Richard Anderson for 38 years, they have two adult children together, a home….a life. Richard let on that his work took him overseas to the Middle East, when in fact he was just going a few towns over to be with his other wife and family. Four years before his death, he married Claire Anderson, and they had two toddler age children together. Eleanor's husband's work took him away from home for weeks every month. Although they had been married for 38 years, the spark had gone away long ago. Richard was a great provider for her family so Eleanor never had anything to worry about. She had quit her job as a teacher right after her children were born as Richard promised he would take care of her.

The Other Wife is a compelling and emotional story that follows two women whose world is turned upside down when they find out that they have been betrayed by the same man, their husband! One wife is looking for the woman that took everything away from her. The other is looking for the that finally made her happy. Neither really knows who they should be looking for. The book had a good plot and several twists to it. I just really didn't connect with the characters.

Two women from two generations, bound together by denial, anger, and grief. How far will their misery and fear push them? Does compassion rule the day, or will a husband’s betrayal lead to a woman’s revenge? What happens when each of these women comes face-to-face with the other wife?Michael’s subsequent novels The Night Ferry and Shatter were both shortlisted for UK Crime Writers Association Steel Dagger in 2007 and 2008. Shatter was also shortlisted in the inaugural ITV3 Thriller Awards in the UK and for South Africa’s Boeke Prize. In August 2008 Shatter won the Ned Kelly award for Australia’s best crime novel. Bleed for Me, Michael’s sixth novel, Bleed for Me was shortlisted for the 2010 Ned Kelly Award. The fact that I predicted all the twists in this book didn’t massively affect my enjoyment of the story and it was still a fast paced thriller that was hard to put down! Although slightly predictable, the twists were still done really well and suspense in this book was amazing, every scene felt so intense especially towards the end of the book. So, begins the psychological thriller The Other Wife by mega-bestselling author Michael Robotham. As a confused and troubled Joe starts investigating his father’s life, secrets and inconsistencies are unearthed. This book is about much more than lies – it’s about the consequences of fabrication; the power that secrets have to destroy not only our own lives, but the lives of those around us.
