Change couldn't be stopped, it couldn't be controlled. Sure as the debris brought in on the ceaseless tides, it would go on unendingly, for better or for worse. In this hostile England, the young and disillusioned Scarlett McCain, a lonely outlaw, will meet by chance Albert Brownie, a somewhat odd boy with his head in the clouds, who wants to leave the past behind him and reach the Free Islands that arise in the archipelago that has submerged old London. Another likable villain in popular kids books is Artemis Fowl. What others can you think of? Artemis becomes less of a villain as his series continues. Do you think there's hope for Scarlett and Albert to change their outlaw ways, even if their options are more limited? That morning, with the dawn hanging wet and pale over the levees, Scarlett McCain woke up beside four dead men. Four! She hadn’t realised it had been so many. No wonder she felt stiff." Britain has become a fragmented kingdom – in fact made up of seven kingdoms – where outlaws like Scarlett McCain survive by robbing banks and living by her wits! Life is hard for Scarlett as wakes beside a dead man who had tried to rob her the night before as she looks down on the fortified town of Cheltenham. As she waits for the town to open its gates to allow her in a wolf watches her – than sets off to investigate the dead outlaws…

The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne - LoveReading4Kids

This book was wonderfully written and the world was real enough to get inside. I felt like I was really on an adventure with the characters, and it was delightful. An irresistible juxtaposition of gunslinging Wild West and waterlogged dystopian England… A thrilling adventure in an inventive new world – long live Scarlett and Browne!” Scarlett gave a bleak half-smile. “It is not really so strange. When I sit upon it, I am in a state of grace.” The characters are both likeable, they bounced off one another. Scarlett quite mouthy and opinionated whilst trying to find a way to survive in the harsh world. Browne having not seen the real outside world before was like a cat in the headlights, mesmerised and overwhelmed by everything and he needed Scarlett’s help. He was also keeping a few big secrets about why he is wanted.

It’s a land of wilderness and often radioactive ruins, with remnants of humanity in scattered walled towns huddling for protection against crazed, cannibalistic Tainted roaming the woods and ruthlessly culling anyone with even minor mutations under the direction of magisterial Faith Houses. Scarlett McCain, professional thief, initially thinks the uncommonly persistent, bowler-hatted gunmen are after her for her last bank robbery—but soon realizes their quarry is actually Albert Browne, a strangely secretive and ingenuous lad she impulsively pulled from a blown-up bus. What makes him so valuable? The answer, coming through hails of gunfire, massive explosions, narrow escapes galore, and encounters with terrifying monsters (not all of them nonhuman) on the way to a desperate climactic struggle in the immense concrete archipelago of London revolves around a secret prison where children with special mental abilities are kept, tortured, and trained for purposes unknown. If Scarlett turns out to be formidable in the crunch and Albert not so much, by the end the two have not only bonded, but proven to have complementary abilities that bid fair to serve them well in future exploits. The vivid setting, rapid-fire dialogue, and nonstop action will propel readers through this raucous, rousing rumble. The cast presents White. Why not? It's a lovely souvenir. Besides, I want to read about our unnatural vices on the way home." My only qualm was that this felt like an epilogue. I didn't feel that sense of completion went the story ended; it felt like the beginning. The book is set in England after some huge disaster, most of the land is flooded or abandoned and there are only a few towns left, the rest is just wilderness. Stroud's characters are, as always, so brilliant. Scarlett and Albert work fantastically together. Their chemistry is excellent, their banter is top notch. I loved how their friendship developed.

They take up company, at least until Scarlett can leave him someplace safe. But it would seem that Scarlett's past is following them with a determination that has never been seen before... or are they following something else? These strangers keep coming until there's a body-littered path to the two new heroes! Only these guys are way more difficult to kill than others!Scarlett clutched pre-emptively at her cuss-box, then took another deep slow breath. “I won’t strike you… Self-evidently you are a simpleton and have a head filled with clay. No, Albert, it is not like a toilet. Quite the reverse! This mat, when it’s unrolled, is holy ground.”
