They blend in well with their surroundings because of their seasonal variation in fur color, from brown in summer to almost pure white in winter. The gradual shedding of the coat and replacement of the guard hairs occurs two times per year and is triggered by changes in day-length. In national parks across interior Alaska, they inhabit spruce forests as well as shrubby habitats in riparian areas. In many areas of the boreal forest, snowshoe hares are the dominant herbivore. Peers, M. J. L., Thornton, D. H. & Murray, D. L. Reconsidering the specialist–generalist paradigm in niche breadth dynamics: resource gradient selection by Canada lynx and bobcat. PLoS ONE 7, e51488 (2012). Most of the novels I’ve read set just before, during, and/or after World War II, involve events taking place in Great Britain or Germany, so this brutal but tender story about the human experience of war in Poland immediately grabbed my attention. Aspects of the book changed my reaction from “how interesting” to “how impressive.” First, Paula Lichtarowicz’s gift for writing makes this unique story immediately come alive. In this scene, a young girl named Lena and her sister Ala are looking for the gypsy fortune-tellers at the carnival that has just come to their town of Przemysl in Southeast Poland.

I am so grateful to Paula Lichtarowicz for writing about the Polish experience during World War II. I just don’t think there is much out there about it and it happened to over a million people! It made me aware that there was a great deal of suffering in the east as well as the west. And even after the war, Poland was given to Stalin at Yalta so that stories were probably never told. It’s actually a miracle that this one survived and I am also thankful that Little, Brown and Company published it and that I was given a free copy through Goodreads Giveaway. I would have gladly paid for it—it’s that good! The snowshoe hare is the most important small game animal in North America, being a predator for many other species. A major predator of the snowshoe hare is the Canada lynx. Historical records of animals caught by fur hunters over hundreds of years show the lynx and hare numbers rising and falling in a cycle, which has made the hare known to biology students worldwide as a case study of the relationship between numbers of predators and their prey. [4] [5] [6] Taxonomy and distribution [ edit ] Snow Hare tells the story of Magdalena (Lena), whose life is caught up in the machinations of others - first the gypsy who tells her fortunes, her parents, her husband and finally World War II. Lena is determined to be a doctor but life dictates another path for her which leads eventually to a house in England. Korpela, K. et al. Nonlinear effects of climate on boreal rodent dynamics: mild winters do not negate high-amplitude cycles. Glob. Change Biol. 19, 697–710 (2013). Hares are a bit larger than rabbits, and they typically have taller hind legs and longer ears. Snowshoe hares have especially large, furry feet that help them to move atop snow in the winter. They also have a snow-white winter coat that turns brown when the snow melts each spring. It takes about ten weeks for the coat to completely change color. Behavior

Wild mammals of North America: biology, management and economies. Baltimore, MD: The Johns Hopkins University Press. pp. 146–163. ISBN 0801823536. Overall, The Snow Hare is the most beautiful story of resilience, love, and triumphing over despair. It has a tone and style that suits the snow on the cover and in title. I don’t know how to put my finger on just what it is, but it connected me to the story even more. On top of that, I absolutely loved Lena and her complexity. At the population peak, snowshoe hares can reach densities of 500 to 600 hares per square kilometer. Snowshoe hares are nocturnal, and also crepuscular. They are more expected to be seen at dawn and dusk.

This novel follows the fate of a Catholic Polish woman in the lead up to WWII and then after the Soviet invasion of Poland. Hodges, K. et al. in Ecosystem Dynamics of the Boreal Forest (eds Krebs, C. et al.) 141–178 (Oxford Univ. Press, 2001). The habitat for some snowshoe hares has changed dramatically, leaving some habitats without snow for longer periods than previously. [44] Some hares have adapted and stay brown all winter. Others, however, continue to turn white in winter. These hares are at an increased risk of being hunted and killed because they are no longer camouflaged. [45] Many people in the scientific community believe [ weaselwords] [ who?] that snowshoe hare populations are at risk of crashing unless interbreeding speeds up the process of evolution to year-round brown. Other species who rely on the hare as part of their diet are also at risk. [46] [47] References [ edit ] Shortly after I finished "The Snow Hare," I sought more information about the history of Poland toward the end of the 1930’s and into the 1940’s. At "My Learning, Lola’s Journey: Deported to Siberia," I read that “In September 1939, Germany and Russia invaded Poland and divided it between them. Stalin wanted to destroy eastern Poland and absorb it into the Soviet Union, so he confiscated land, property, and businesses, and deported over 1.5 million Polish people to slave labour camps in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and the Arctic Circle. Many died because of appalling conditions during the journeys and at the camps.” Penczykowski, R. M., Connolly, B. M. & Barton, B. T. Winter is changing: trophic interactions under altered snow regimes. Food Webs 13, 80–91 (2017).Come on, twig. What would you choose, really, and don’t say an emperor or a pope or something ridiculous.’ This was a wonderful story for the snowy, rainy days we have been having and has a calming, yet sober tone overall. Lichtarowicz delivers a dramatic story of a Polish woman’s coming-of-age during WWII. . . . The gripping narrative of Lena’s wartime experiences contrasts bleak deprivation and suffering with sumptuous scenes of familial affection and the ache of true love. This will transport readers.”
