The Snowman and the Snowdog - Penguin Books UK The Snowman and the Snowdog - Penguin Books UK

When Billy wishes his snowman and snowdog to life, they take him on a journey to the North Pole, where he competes in a sled race and even meets Santa Claus! Young readers can now enjoy the magic of The Snowman and the Snowdog in this simple, accessible adaptation. Fans of the modern classic will definitely want to come along on this new adventure. Later that night, something magical happens, taking Billy on the most wonderful Christmas adventure. The Snowman is the perfect festive read for ALL the family!

So when the snow falls and Billy starts to build a Snowman, he knows exactly what to do- he builds a Snowdog too! The story is bookended by two small tragedies. Although they are not dwelled upon, sensitive children may find that sad. The art is very faithful to the original though this book has far more words than the original (I would have liked to see fewer words, actually, and to let the art speak more).

This is more of a winter book than a Christmas book, but I categorized it as Christmas because that's usually when we read books about snow as well. The story actually starts out pretty sad. I thought it was a bit heavy for a kids book. The little boy's dog he loved so much dies and he gets sad and depressed. The Snowman and the Snowdog Activity Book: The Snowman and the Snowdog Activity BookThe Snowman and the Snowdog Activity Bo A boy moves into a new home and in his eagerness to explore, he discovers an old hat, a scarf, a shriveled tangerine and some coal hidden in his new room, along with a photo of a boy and a snowman. The boy builds his own snowman just like the one in the photo. For good measure, he adds a snowdog. The snow duo come to life in a magical adventure.Feeling lonely after moving to a new location and losing his dog to old age, Billy stumbles on a loose floorboard and discovers a box of mementos from another boy who lived in this same room years ago. Billy uses items from the box to build a snowman just like the one in the photo, and with leftover snow he forms a snowdog. This magical story is bittersweet - the snowman melts but the snowdog becomes real. Why can’t the snowman go near the fireplace? Use this as the starting point for discussions about temperature, freezing and melting. Based on the original classic by Raymond Briggs, which has sold over 8.5 million copies and is available in fifteen languages, the story and illustrations are by the creators of the animated special by the same name." This video shows an ‘animatic’ (which is an animated storyboard). Could you make an animatic based on your own story? Choose a series of images and write captions to accompany each one. Use time words (e.g. first, next, then, after, later, finally) to show the sequence of events.
