About this deal

Overall, this is another Hurwitz book that I would highly recommend. I find Hurwitz to be a refreshing author. He adds suspense but keeps things somewhat realistic throughout the book, so it keeps you hooked from the very start of the book. He is a creative author and I have not read any of his books that let me down. I look forward to more Hurwitz books in the future. I have read a few Herbert's now, and I definitely preferred the others - (The Fog, The Rats and Portent) - but this is not going to put me off reading any more of his books. One of the last great untold stories of the Holocaust, The Survivor is an astonishing account of one man's unbreakable spirit, unshakeable faith, and extraordinary courage in the face of evil. And as soon as he meets with his mates Ash, Sean, Olivia at Surf& Turf, the very same place Olivia and her new roommate art student Bronte works, the old memories start to come out, inner demons start to torture him.

Michael Calvin is one of the UK’s most accomplished sportswriters, having worked in more than eighty countries. He has covered every major sporting event, including seven summer Olympic Games and six World Cup finals. He was named Sports Writer of the Year for his despatches as a crew member in a round-the-world yacht race and has twice been named Sports Reporter of the Year. Kieran is home visiting his parents when an event unfolds which brings up the past when two local men died. Is this event tied to the past? What did happen all those years ago?The difficulty with telling a story in reverse is (obviously) that the reader already knows how it ends; all the narrative tension therefore rests on the events leading up to the tragedy 20 years earlier. The big reveal, when it comes, is not wholly convincing; it feels like an attempt to give the novel a thriller-esque twist and relies on a slightly implausible degree of suppressed memory. But as a study of complex sibling relationships and the layers of guilt and resentment laid down over a lifetime of burying the past, The Survivors is an accomplished debut. It’s been awhile since I’ve read a Gregg Hurwitz book. To be honest, The Survivor has been on my to-read list for awhile. I’m glad I finally got around to it. This author is a master at creating anti-heroes, and Nate Overby doesn’t disappoint. He’s an absolutely wonderful character. I couldn’t get enough of Nate. One morning, Nate Overbay, former soldier who suffers from severe PTSD, decided to commit suicide. His life is in shambles, he's talking to his dead friend, his ex-wife and daughter are estranged to him, and he's also suffers from ALS. He climbs out of a bathroom window on the eleventh floor of a bank to commit suicide... but then he hears gunshots. A group of robbers have taken the bank hostages, and Nate goes into action and kills them, except one, who promises him he made the biggest mistake of his life.

Look, I didn't really like any of them, but they were an interesting bunch and different enough that it kept the story interesting. Plus having so many of them meant there were lots of guesses as to who was behind all the drama. He was one of our greatest popular novelists, whose books are sold in thirty-three other languages, including Russian and Chinese. Widely imitated and hugely influential, his 19 novels have sold more than 42 million copies worldwide. The characters were mainly believable and engaging, particularly Nate and his family. I did think that some of the plot involving Pavlo were a little far fetched in places but there was enough tension and twists and turns in the story to keep the reader’s interest. A recommended read. The prose was underdeveloped. Plus, how many times did they say the word, "Mate"? Was the editor asleep? The plot is nothing to write home about as well- there's nothing here except for the basic premise, and the fact that none of the characters in this novel is fleshed out or given anything besides very basic motivations for what they're doing, doesn't help in the least. In fact, calling this novel a "thriller" is a stretch. Trei frați revin la casa de vacanță a copilăriei lor, în căutarea unor răspunsuri. Totul are legătură cu un accident petrecut într-o vară, în urmă cu 20 de ani.
