About this deal

Enjoy lane swimming sessions across Edinburgh. Our pools split into different lanes at the lifeguard's discretion. The carpets are beige – I feel an urge to remove my shoes; the walls white; each picture, each object, has its place; a cleaner is doing her weekly rounds – young, dark-haired, Spanish perhaps, the most beautiful cleaner you have ever seen. There is absolute silence, broken only by a loud burst of the overture to Swan Lake on Hollinghurst's mobile phone when his mother calls. As well as Tchaikovsky's lush ballet scores, he has an enduring love of Henry James – there is a bookcase of Jamesiana in his top-floor study. James became his art; forswore life to write perfect fictions. My immediate suspicion is that the pupil is taking the same course as the master, though I accept it is a large thesis to hang on beige furnishings. Make a splash with all the family in these 55 minute open-water sessions. With floats, sinkers and toys available it’s great fun for children and grown-ups alike.

My second Hollinghurst read, this also a book club selection. Hollinghurst is a talented author and that's really what made this book tolerable for me. He has an extensive vocabulary but the text isn't burdened by it. There's a certain scholarly yet approachable cadence to his writing style that resonates with me. Very readable. Primarily a character-driven piece with a suggestion of a plot hanging about. All the hallmarks of the literary fiction genre. This is a highly original memoir from a Canadian swimmer who made the Olympic trials, but not the Olympic team. She’s also an art editor and graphic novelist, and includes some of her own paintings and photographs of her many swimsuits, which give this book a different texture and flavour. It’s included here in part for personal reasons. She mentions former Canadian Olympian Victor Davis, who I had the good fortune of meeting as a young swimmer: I swam for the same club as he did and when our practice times overlapped, he kindly signed my swim cap. Pools that follow the Code of Practice can put themselves forward to be assessed against it. Pools that meet the standard of the Code can be recognised by accreditation with the PWTAG PoolMark award. So Judith gets her pool. Lois tells us that Judith either always got what she wanted or would sulk until she did. Just below this Lois tells us how Judith one day cut her long hair short and her mother was upset with her, then comes this: I also felt a certain pride in what I had done, in a British manner wanting it to be communicated, but in silence."Not knowing a hell of a lot about gay life or the gay community (in Britain or anywhere else) or British fiction, I feel this is something I can't really comment on. Upstairs, he discovers Phil having sex with Bill. Disoriented, he leaves and wanders to James's and then the Corry, where Charles Nantwich reveals his designs in giving Will the diaries. Will and James go to Staines's to see a film, not a piece of pornography but an archive recording of Ronald Firbank in old age. The novel closes. Rupert has been told to watch out for Arthur; he reports that he has seen him with his brother Harold. I feel like I have nothing to say about this book. Nonetheless I'm going to write a review, because this is what I do. You have been warned. Macdonald, Moira (11 July 2003). " 'Swimming Pool' seduces with a dip into surprising, erotic waters". Mysteries of known American writer Mary Roberts Rinehart include The Circular Staircase (1908) and The Door (1930). If you’re looking for a swimming activity with a difference, why not try open water swimming? Spend time in the great outdoors as you swim away your stress. This activity is ideal for swimmers who are over 14 years and are fairly comfortable in the water.

In a few seconds the hard-on might pass from one end of the room to the other, with the foolish perfection of a Busby Berkeley routine." Will continues reading Charles's diaries. On the way to a boxing club financially supported by Nantwich, Will has an unpleasant encounter with a working class boy, who offers him sex for money. Will refuses; there are undertones of fear and violence. The Swimming-Pool Library won the Somerset Maugham Award in 1988, and the E. M. Forster Award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1989. On the train, Will cruises a young man whom he takes home; they engage in sexual intercourse. He begins to read Charles's papers.

"That's jumping out of the frying-pan into the fire with a vengeance. I've been in this business a long time, Miss Maynard. I've seen a lot of death and some suicides. But I never heard of killing yourself to avoid being killed."And she lives with her brother in what once was (before the crash) her formerly-well-off family's summer home in the country; their sister Judith has years ago married very well and gone off to take her particular brand of spoiled beauty to the social columns. La Piscine” is set almost entirely at a villa in the south of France, not far from Saint-Tropez. There, a nearly middle-aged couple, Marianne (Romy Schneider) and Jean-Paul (Alain Delon), are spending their summer vacation at the home of friends who are away and have lent it to them. It takes a long while, in this two-hour-plus film, to find out who they are and what they do. Jean-Paul is a novelist whose book proved to be an unspecified kind of disaster. In its wake, he took a job on the creative side of advertising. Marianne is a journalist (also of unspecified interests and accomplishments) who has tired of the work and is content to live with Jean-Paul on his salary. They’ve been together for just two and a half years, and the erotic spark is still strong—kept so by a whiff of sadomasochism. During one bout of lovemaking, they are interrupted by a phone call from their mutual friend Harry (Maurice Ronet), who’s in the vicinity and will drop in on them, bringing his eighteen-year-old daughter, Pénélope (Jane Birkin)—whose very existence they’re now first learning of.
