An Ode to the Horniest Sitcom Parents, the Belchers and the Wilkersons By Clare Martin April 11, 2023 | 10:40am

Set in a world full of magic and demigods, donuts and small-town drama, this enchantingly quirky, utterly unique fantasy is perfect for fans of The House in the Cerulean Sea and The Invisible Library.I showed up for the fantastic, fun fantasy setting but it was Hart and Mercy that kept me reading.”—Ruby Dixon Hachette Book Group is a leading book publisher based in New York and a division of Hachette Livre, the third-largest publisher in the world. Social Media The letters could have been better, but I preferred the toned-down version. It also helps that I didn’t even think of You’ve Got Mail. The letters suit the characters (who aren’t philosophical), so no complaints.

Thank you, Hachette Book Group/Orbit, for a copy of The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy for an honest review. The writing was right up my alley, except for some parts here and there that I skimmed - don't ask me why, I couldn't even explain why my attention floundered at times. I think I kinda loved it though, even though I feel like I can’t explain why. Maybe I don’t need too 😂. I wanted to love this book sooo much, there were some really great things about it but overall, it was kind of disappointing for me. With The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy, Bannen has crafted a fantasy romance that should be on everyone’s radar—a story about love, about loss, and yes, about death, but ultimately about how important it is to live, especially when you find the one person you want to spend that life with most.

I laughed, I cried, I wondered aloud what I was reading several times, I blessed the rains down in Africa, I thanked the maker. Seriously, I really did cry. I did not think this book would make me cry. Oh how the turntables…

This quirky mash-up will entertain romance readers, especially those that enjoy the enemies-to-lovers trope."Emily Borsa, Booklist Content notes for discussion of parental death (occurred prior to the story), mild violence and gore, and lots of (compassionately cared for) dead bodies. In any case, the basic setup here is … actually, it’s really hard to summarise. But essentially you have Hart, a lonely, zombie-fighter, demigod marshal, and Mercy, who works for her family’s funeral parlour: a mutual failure to understand the other has created an antagonistic dynamic between them that shows no sign of changing, until—each of them, in their own way desperate for emotional connection—they accidentally enter into an anonymous correspondence. Though, honestly, this is one of those attempts at a plot summary that barely touches on what the book is actually about … and that feels sort of right, because while Hart and Mercy is not explicitly a suspenseful read, unravelling its world-building is definitely one of its pleasures. If someone told me I would love a romance happening in a world full of zombies, I wouldn’t believe them. Yet, here we are, and it was fantastic! A uniquely charming mixture of whimsy and the macabre that completely won me over ' Helen Hoang, author of The Kiss Quotient The Princess Bridemeets You've Got Mailin this enchantingly quirky, completely refreshing fantasy with a rom-com-worthy premise, perfect for readers of T he House in the Cerulean Seaand The Invisible Library. Each minute I spent with The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy endeared it to me further. It is a complicated premise examined with brilliant scrutiny and a character story with a lot of depth and hot action to boot. I had way more fun with this standalone than I thought I would and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fantasy romance that is a little different.
