This could not be further from the truth. Being a Tolkien enthusiast, I have done a great deal of searching throughout Tolkien's books, letters, and notations made by Christopher Tolkien. In my search, I have found evidence of direct citations used by David Day. Although you will find many detractors from David Day's work, it has come to my attention that this book is 100% accurate. Both [Satan and Melkor/Morgoth] are loud in their defiance, claiming that they would "rather rule in hell than serve in heaven". One might have admired these rebel angels if one believed their defiance was in the name of liberty- however, both lied. Their rebellions were only provoked by envy and the usurpers' wishes to take the perceived tyrants' place. Never were two more natural tyrants than Morgoth and Satan.” These drawings really bring Tolkien's work to life, and the colour illustrations are genuine works of art which make this book the perfect coffee table book. Day, David (June 5, 2018). The Heroes of Tolkien. Thunder Bay Press. p.dedication. ISBN 9781684121045. The castle, and all it represents, will always be with us. Once it was born, once the stone was made living, the repository of power made real, the idea could never be unmade. Even if all the castles of all the world were destroyed, in the minds of men they would be built anew; the wizard called imagination would raise high walls and towers out of ruins.” A Tolkien Bestiary is an illustrated reference book pertaining to the eras, flora, fauna, and people-groups of Middle-earth throughout all Ages, written by David Day in 1978 and currently published by Harbour Publishing (Canada). Day was born and raised in Victoria on Vancouver Island, Canada. [4] His father worked as chief fireman for area military bases. [5] Day was editor of his high school's newspaper, and also contributed high school sports columns to the Victoria Daily Times, [6] graduating from Victoria High School in 1966. [7]David Days best-selling books on the life and works of JRR Tolkien include: A Tolkien Bestiary, Tolkien: the Illustrated Encyclopedia, Tolkien's Ring, The World of Tolkien and The Hobbit Companion. After finishing high school in Victoria, British Columbia, Day worked as a logger for five years on Vancouver Island before graduating from the University of Victoria. Subsequently he has travelled widely, most frequently to Greece and Britain. And I found that just reading through it as if each entry was a chapter in a book helped me to recall some of the stories. It's a kind of mental map to the peoples and creatures of middle earth. Williams, Alexandra (July 6, 1997). "Peace breaks out in Middle Earth". The Independent. London (UK), United Kingdom. p.10. Furthermore David Day, brings these works together, and presents the whole picture of Middle Earth. The Illustrated World of Tolkien (derived from A Tolkien Bestiary, Tolkien: The Illustrated Encyclopedia, The World of Tolkien, and books #1-6 of Tolkien Illustrated Guides) One can then go on to look at the various families of Elfkind, and the entries under the different names for each. That brief, shinning moment - when a neighbor gives permission for you to peruse their library, when you should be helping them dust and shift trash. Day has published over 46 books of poetry, natural history, ecology, mythology, fantasy and children's literature. Day has been a columnist for Punch. [9] He is best known for his books on the life and works of J. R. R. Tolkien. [10]Much was the same with me, when this was pulled from a cramped shelf of Choral binders. To say I was surprised is an understatement; to say I was thrilled can be measure best by the richter scale. Day's Tolkien's Ring was illustrated by academy award-winning artist Alan Lee, as was Castles, The Animals Within, Gothic and Quest For King Arthur. Dedyna, Katherine (October 25, 2015). With the release of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series, Day's 2019 An Encyclopedia of Tolkien debuted on the Toronto Star 's list of bestselling books in Canada on October 12, 2022. [16] Other books [ edit ] While many other authors had published works of fantasy before Tolkien, the great success of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings led directly to a popular resurgence and the shaping of the modern fantasy genre. This has caused Tolkien to be popularly identified as the “father” of modern fantasy literature—or, more precisely, of high fantasy, as in the work of authors such as Ursula Le Guin and her Earthsea series. In 2008, The Times ranked him sixth on a list of “The 50 greatest British writers since 1945”. J. R. R. Tolkien – First Edition Identification Guide I must confess I like Tyler's book simply because it offers the most comprehensive coverage of Tolkien material in a single volume (that I have seen at any rate), but I take your point that--as it is poorly referenced--it is too easy for the unsuspecting reader to accept the veracity of Tyler's entries. A lot of dedication went into this work from a man who clearly appreciates middle earth and has gone to great lengths to illustrate what is to be found there. Many people who claim that David Day's compilation is "trash", are those who insist that he makes up entries to satisfy white space.
