This article about a children's novel of the 1990s is a stub. You can help Wikipedia by expanding it. In Illuminary, the main character Kamryn finds herself in the land of Ur after falling down a staircase. I felt an immediate kinship—fellow klutzes, unite! This contemporary adventure blends elements of well-known fairytales (like Peter Pan) with a unique, fantastical world. For me, characters really make the story come alive, and this story was no different. Ur held wonderful side characters, as well as a villain that’s easy to hate. The reading level/plot/characterization--a great fit together. This is an early chapter book that will hold young readers' interest with a great story and memorable characters (not least of which is the dog, Tornado). It's not going to feel too "young" for older new readers, but it will still be understandable for young new readers.

What Stands In A Storm: Three Days In The Worst Superstorm To Hit The South’s Tornado Alley – Kim Cross In just a few short months the Tornado force had undergone a massive transformation, from a Cold War, low-level, primarily nuclear strike force, to a highly accurate, medium-level laser-guided bomber and one of the most experienced combat forces in the world." Although tornadoes have been spotted in every U.S. state, many form in a region called Tornado Alley. This zone in the Midwest extends from Texas to Ohio and includes Iowa, Kansas, South Dakota, Oklahoma, and Nebraska. From Newbery Medal-winning author Betsy Byars comes a sweet, entertaining story that will touch the heart of dog lovers at any age. One of the best tornado books set in Tornado Alley, The Mercy of the Sky is an emotionally draining but exceptionally enthralling novel by Holly Bailey. Winner of the Oklahoma Book and American Meteorological Society’s awards, Bailey combines incredible research with immense storytelling, returning to her hometown after the worst twister on record ravaged it. Betsy Byars was an American author of children's books. She wrote over sixty books for young people. Her first novel was published in 1962. Her novel Summer of the Swans won the 1971 Newbery Medal. She also received a National Book Award for Young People's Literature for The Night Swimmers and an Edgar Award for Wanted ... Mud Blossom!! Tornado Times - 1991-1999 Peace Dividends White Paper, Operation Provide Comfort, Iraq-Southern Watch Operation Jural, Operation Desert Fox (1998), NATO Operation Allied Force-Yugoslavia. Most commonly found in the North American continent, tornadoes generally spin at 180 kilometres per hour (110 miles per hour), though the most destructive can reach speeds of up to 480 kilometres per hour (300 mph), covering a distance of over 62 miles. Join us at What We Reading as we present the best tornado books that delve into how they formed, the biggest ones recorded and how brave meteorologists dedicate their lives to studying these incredible weather patterns.

If weather conditions are right for a tornado to form, experts issue a tornado watch for a region, like a county or large part of a state. This doesn't mean that a tornado is on the way. But it could be—meteorologists issue the watch so people can be prepared. If winds from the thunderstorm vary greatly in speed or direction, the updraft will begin to rotate. As the rotating updraft draws in more warm air from the moving thunderstorm, its rotation speed increases, and a funnel cloud begins to form. As the twister gains strength, the funnel becomes longer. (The funnel becomes more visible as more dirt and debris is caught in its rotation.) It’s most dangerous when it touches the ground.Whether you read it as an adult or with a child, before or after you have seen the movie multiple times, you can marvel at how Dorothy and all the characters (and there are many more in the books than in the movie) inspire the readers by overcoming adversity. Prepare a safe room. This can be your basement or the lowest room in the center of your house or apartment building, away from outer walls and windows. Window-free closets and bathrooms work well, too.
