When it came time to render the harsh and unforgiving realism of L.A.’s criminal underworld of director Antoine Fuqua‘s “ Training Day” in crisp 4k, the process risked diminishing the film’s hard edge. Washington has always revelled in character complexity in both the factual and fictional realms. From the rebellious Civil War soldier Trip in Glory (for which he won his first Oscar) to his layered and mercurial title role in Spike Lee's Malcolm X, Washington's ability to get beneath the skin of a certain individual has never been in doubt. Idealistic young cop Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke) is a newlywed and an expectant father. His goal is to make detective in the LAPD and the fastest way to do this is to join the undercover division. While here, he has to work the streets for a year or so before earning his promotion. Hoyt gets the opportunity to work under Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington) where they spend the day getting to know one another and patrol some of L.A.’s toughest neighborhoods. Alonzo has streets smarts and prefers a different kind of law – he lets criminals go after he’s scared them and so forth. As the day progresses, Hoyt witnesses a different kind of policework and it’s not one that he’s too fond of. Is Alonzo the force’s saving grace or just a corrupt cop?

Bale reasoned that his grandiose turn only worked because Wahlberg offered the relatively more calm and collected antidote, sparing the audience from an endless onslaught of scene-chewing. Training Day arrives on 4K Ultra HD with an English Dolby Atmos mix in addition to several foreign language dubs in Dolby Digital. The Atmos mix is an atmospheric affair with subtle effects placed throughout the soundstage. This works for this film which is mostly dialogue and Washington and Hawke driving around. When there is action or there are songs, the low end is beefy and sound balance places a good bit of ambient height effects around as well. The Supplements definitely getting the 4k release of this - out of interest, any idea if the accompanying blu ray will be the remastered version or the original old blu ray (and how would we know in the absence of a confirmation from WB/ a reviewer)? It looks like in the US it includes the new remastered blu but who knows here as it's not always consistent. Antoine Fuqua's Training Day is the director's best film, with a tight pace and outstanding leads in Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke. Training Day: Crossing the Line– This is more of the same and, for whatever reason, it’s been renamed from “First Look: The Making of Training Day.” It’s very well-made, but just has interviews with the cast and crew about what the movie is and how much Actor A loved working with Actor B and so on.
