First, make sure you set your camera to manual focus (usually the MCS switch on the front, or in menu) As a consequence of your camera nerdery, you may have acquired a fetish for so called “ultra-fast” prime lenses, such as the Canon “Dream” lens, or one of the most widely lusted after and expensive examples, the Leica Noctilux 50mm 0.95 Thanks Curtis! Appreciate this! Indeed exactly what I am looking for: an all-round lens that can make great portraits (I generally prefer half or full body) and that gives excellent across the frame sharpness stopped down. While the scene above may not show it fully there are sample images in this article where I see a difference. Even with images at further distances, you can create separation and quantify the out-of-focus areas easier at f/0.95. The difference should be even more pronounced if you come from a Fujifilm XF 35mm f/2 R WR. on the APSC-sized Fujifilm X-mount sensor, a 35mm lens gives an equivalent view of 50mm at a 1.5x crop factor, hence the mention of the Noctilux in the title.

Interestingly, the lens performance vignetting-wise is much better than I expected. In fact, the TTArtisan 27mm ƒ2.8 had more vignetting wide open at ƒ2.8 versus this lens at ƒ0.95 and I do recall that the Mitakon 35mm ƒ0.95 II for X-mount having more vignetting too. ConclusionI have tried the TTArtisan 50mm f0.95 on the APS-C Leica CL mirrorless camera via a Leica M-L adapter. With the crop factor it gives a 75mm equivalent focal length. I much prefer to use the lens on full frame cameras as a crop sensor camera cuts off all the nice imperfections and edge defects. TTArtisan 50mm f0.95 + Leica CL From the outer apperance this looks very much like a Leica M lens including the famous red dot. Markings are yellow/white (engraved and filled with paint) focus ring has perfect resistance and turns about 120° from the minimum focus distance of 0.7 m to infinity.

From the get-go, I was a bit disappointed in how soft the images looked at f/0.95, even in the viewfinder. The fact that I had a larger than usual EVF in the X-H2S could have something to do with this but for many of my sample images, I refrained from shooting the lens wide-open. However, already at f/1.4, there are visible improvements. And in this perspective, it is then important to say the TTArtisan 35mm ƒ0.95 is 1% the price of the Leica 50mm Noctilux and easily only approximately 33% of its weight, and we cannot run from the laws of physics in lens design. I have decent results on the Z6 with the Nikkor 50 1.2 but hate the bulky adapter and am now tempted by the Mitakon mark-iii in Nikon z-mount – but not sure how the larger aperture renders especially in low light.

Whereas the Summicron is near perfect, optically corrected to be flat and neutral, the TTArtisan 50mm F/0.95 has a bold signature. In the end we are in a similar situation here as we were with the TTArtisan 21mm 1.5. At this price point there is no alternative with the same specs available, but there are clearly some compromises you should be aware of, which I tried to outline in this review. The TTArtisan 35mm f/0.95 was released in November 2022 and is made for Fujifilm X mount, Sony E, Canon RF, Canon M, Nikon Z, L-Mount, and Micro four-thirds. When a mint 7Artisans 35mm f/0.95 popped up on our local used camera ‘buy and sell’ I could not resist.

It may be an acquired taste shooting at f/0.95 exclusively but think of it as a different paintbrush and with a bit of patience I think you can create unique images with this lens. The obvious question to Sony users is: how does the TTArtisan 50mm 0.95 compare to the slightly cheaper Zhong Yi 50mm 0.95 III? Disclaimer: The text you will read below is based on my own thoughts and experience with my copy of the 7Artisans 35mm F0.95. The lens was bought as used but in mint condition. I’ve also bought an unbranded lens hood in aluminum, partly because it keeps the front glass element safer, but also because this lens has some major struggles with direct sunlight. I recommend everyone to buy a lens hood to get the best result out of the 35mm f0.95.

The Zhong Yi 50mm 0.95 E lenses really struggled here and the Zenitar 50mm 0.95 E set a new negative record so I was very curious to see how the TTArtisan 50mm 0.95 fares.
